HP Pavilion DV6000 Laptop Wireless Failure – HP Says 1 in 7 Affected
If your wireless is failing for no reason on your HP Pavilion DV6000 laptop, call HP before your warranty runs out. An HP tech admitted that 1 in 7 of them require motherboard replacement to fix the problem. Not a BIOS upgrade or drivers.
[UPDATE] – It has now been released that the problem was possibly due to faulty heat handling on the NVidia G84 and G86 parts. The BIOS update, listed in the extended warranty, simply changes how the fan operates. That should give your product about enough time to function before the warranty runs out.
You should call HP to get your laptop serviced if your laptop is exhibiting the following behavior
- Wireless device no longer recognized
- Wireless switch doesn’t work
- Wireless will not come back after shutting down or going into a sleep mode
The HP Pavilion DV6000 is a fairly popular laptop. Available at many retail outlets and online, it happens to be the one that I decided to purchase just under a year ago.
It’s a decent machine and the price was right. My particular model is a DV6436nr that I picked up at Best Buy. After removing Vista and installing Ubuntu, the laptop was running rather well. However, the wireless was spotty at best.
I assumed that it was due to the difficulties that can occur with wireless and Linux. I followed all of the guides and installed all the drivers. Yet for some reason, my wireless just seemed to be getting worse. Eventually, the device would only work when it felt like it. I decided to go ahead and install Windows XP and see if I could get it working in that OS. No dice. My laptop was still within warranty so I decided to start looking around to see if anyone else was having this problem.
It wasn’t long before I came across this lengthy thread at the HP site. In it, “Anna” from HP says that updating the BIOS will fix the problem:
“Hi, it’s Anna from HP Total Care,
I’m sorry some of you are having trouble with your wireless WLAN not detecting your wireless network and not displaying in your device manager. The issue appears to be affecting AMD based Dv6000, v6000 and Dv9000 notebooks running Microsoft Windows Vista.
We’ve got a BIOS update and some instructions on getting this resolved. If the BIOS update does not resolve the issue, please contact HP support and we will help facilitate a repair.
Please do not try replacing your wireless card or inserting a third party wireless modules as some have suggested here on this forum. This will not resolve the issue and is in violation of FCC regulations.
[...Instructions on how to install the BIOS update...]
I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you have any further questions and we’ll work to respond personally or on the forum as best we can.
Anna”
This solution was garbage and yielded no results. The switch on the front was basically useless and the device simply was not being recognized any longer. Frustrated, I searched further and found that this is a much more prevalent problem than I originally thought. Even ZDNet posted an article about the failure.
I eventually called HP to get my laptop repaired. As indicated in other posts, the solution is a motherboard replacement.
Here’s the kicker: the customer service agent who helped me when I called HP said:
“Yea, there’s about 1 in 7 laptops that are affected. But, there’s no way to tell which ones they are and that’s not enough to do a recall.”
Wow. The worst part is: the problem is hard to diagnose due to the fact that the device only works half the time. Instead of it being a problem with the wireless, or the drivers, or the BIOS, it’s a problem with the motherboard.
I’ll admit: the repair process was painless. They sent me a box overnight with shipping labels and I had my laptop back in a week or so. But come on HP: if 1 in 7 devices are failing and it’s hard to detect, help the consumer out and let them know.
Until then however, you can call HP at 800-474-6836.

Hi, my name is ROE and this article helped me alot. I had my HP dv6105us for 2 years and just last week I ran into the same difficulties. I get on my laptop last week as always and I write my blogs, check my email and visit my favorite gaming websites, as any other day I log off and I’m packing my laptop in my bag to go to work, upon arrival getting to my office I pull my laptop out, attempt to log on to the internet. My WLAN icon isn’t on the tabs bar and the device driver isn’t showing in Network connections or in Hardware device, its like the driver never existed so my switch is amber and not blue but the switch is on so I have a friend at Geek Squad who told me the same thing I would have to switch out my motherboard $600, my face dropped, I replied I might as well buy another laptop. So instead I bought a USB WIFI adaptor to patch the problem. I wish I signed up for the service plan when I bought my laptop but its OK when your gadgets give you problems you learn lessons, I just might go into TECH work after this.

I had this problem and had my laptop sent away about 10 months into my warranty. Now its happened again, and my laptop is no longer under warranty. I really don’t know what to do. Will putting a new wireless card inside really not work?

It looks like the extended service warranty that rich davies supplied a link to may be helpful for you Paul.
Good luck!

I bought a DV6000 in Sept. 2007 for college, and I still got about 6 weeks left on my warranty (only got it for a year thinking odds are after a year anything faulty is going to crop up, that was before I started looking at the model online). I’ m going to try calling them today and see if they will pay for my shipping too, even though the extended warranty doesn’t cover my product number.
I can say that generally I am very disappointed with both HP’s service and my purchase. I have had problems with compatibility between Vista and the graphics card, problems with shutting the computer down (could have been Vista there though), letters keep falling off my keyboard (I can reattach them luckily), the DVD-ROM drive and Xp don’t like each other to the point where it sometimes thinks blank DVD’s are CD’s. And now my wireless card is on the fritz, working for a few hours and then blanking out again.
The few times I have contacted hp (fro instance with the DVD drive) theny have all almost pointed me to the BIOS (which can be the cause of everything) or Windows, which they never tell me to repair but reinstall which they themselves don’t recommend.
I would recommend anyone looking at this line of computers to stay away, though HP does have an overall good track record for other models.

I had the same problem. I have a presario v6000 and the wireless device stopped working. I couldn’t connect to the internet at all. I searched and searched the web at work to find ways to fix it. I tried updating the BIOS like Hp website says to do, I tried reinstall my NVIDIA– NOTHING WORKED. I might have even screwed it up even more by doing these things. I took my computer to a local tech and they said the wireless device is fried and to use a USB network adapter to connect to the internet and the nice thing was, they didn’t charge me for telling me that. My warranty is up and this has been the 3rd problem I’ve had with this stinky laptop. HP representatives are very difficult to communicate with and since I haven’t updated my warranty, the customer service reps were ruthless and unsympathetic.
August 15th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
When I called they said there is a recall of the wireless network adapter. All I did was call the above number and said I’m calling about the wireless recall went from there.

I have been fighting the same wifi problem with my dv6000. I got a message from hp that (hp connections) is no longer supported and causes problems. After I uninstalled the program, my wifi was detected and intstalled. No problems since. Fingers crossed.

I have the same problems with my pavilion dv6000 and of course the warranty just expired. i called hp tech support and they told me that since the warranty is up, i’d have to pay $50 for just 14 days of phone support for only this problem or $100 for a year for only this problem!!! they wouldn’t tell me if there is even a way to fix it!! i’m never buying anything from hp again!

My DV6045nr has been sent in twice for mb replacement. Thank goodness I purchased the Frys Electronics extended warranty.
Of course, I demanded a complete laptop replacement with a newer, less problematic one. But, was told that Fry’s policy with HP laptops is the same as HP’s policy. In that, you must have submitted the laptop for repair for the SAME problem 4 times before they will consider a complete replacement.
This is ridiculous! My machine is a development machine and takes 2-3 days to configure it to how I need it for my development. To prep a loaner machine takes 2-3 days,
1st time = 14days (at HP) + 3days + 3days = 20 days
2nd time = 12days (at HP) + 3days + 3days = 18 days
Although I had a loaner by Frys, I was without my laptop 38 days so far with 12 of those days (almost 2 weeks) I was unable to work to to the transitions and configurations to and from the loaner machines!
This 4 strikes and you’re replaced policy is BS!

Sorry, I forgot to mention that they do NOT REPLACE IT WITH A FIXED BOARD!!
They simply replace it with the SAME FAULTY version mb and it WILL HAPPEN AGAIN!!
This is a HUGE PROBLEM above and beyond just the problem itself!

My dv6000 hp laptop wifi switch went out and hp recall won’t cover a 2006
I tried to use a wireless usb but that would not work. Luckily best buy had a belkin n wireless express card adapter that worked in my wirless slot. This by passed the switch and everything is nowing working. It was alot cheaper to purchase the card for 56.00, then pay best buy 89.00 plus parts and have them send the computer out . I hope everybodies hp laptop has an express card slot. This truly worked for our laptop
September 22nd, 2008 at 3:50 am
Same problem on 2 different dv6000 machines. I replaced the wireless module in the first one with a brand new module, but did not fix the problem. Definitely a Motherboard problem!! Both machines barley out of warranty! Bad HP!!

I have the dv6324us. Got it May 2007 with the Windows Vista. I had to reboot at least 3 times before it would actually work (which mean using up at least 30 minutes of my time). If I left it on but put down the monitor, and try to use it again even after just 30 minutes, I would have to boot it up again (x3). After about two weeks of frustrating time-wasting, I asked my husband to install Linux and XP on it (dual-boot) and it worked “perfectly”. I thought it was perfect compared to the earlier frustrations, until I read more problems connected to this laptop. This year, it died roughly about 3 mos after warranty expired (1-yr), as in, the blue lights are up, I could hear a short hum, some short beeps when I touch the blue lights, but monitor is black. Tried external monitor, same thing. Tried to reboot, same thing. So in the past week I had been searching for possible solutions (I’d hate to replace it with a new laptop when it has not reached two years!), and saw the many problems associated with it. In retrospect now, I see other problems that I have had in using this laptop: on and off detection of wireless, battery heating up too soon so my laptop would shut off suddenly (especially when watching DVD on it), and lately, battery just would not recharge enough, that I had to have it plugged in all the time when I used it.
In searching for solution, I came across the service enhancement program of HP and saw my product listed there eligible for repair. I called and said the problem about the monitor failure (which was included in the symptoms expected in this series), but failed to mention all the other problems I have had in the past when I was still able to use it. I was told to send in only the notebook minus the adapter and battery. So I called them again (1-866-671-7362) to add these issues and they edited their documentation so that now I will send battery and power adapter as well (and that I should receive them back too along the with notebook; if not, then I can ask them to send to me those two items).
I also mentioned my concern about repeated failures despite repairs — how long will I be eligible for free repairs [should be up to May 2009 as per their webpage on the service enhancement program or up to 90 days after (the last) free repair] , how many times can I send my notebook for repairs [up to 3 times, then if it fails again, my case will be escalated to a case manager and I will be eligible for replacement]. I was offered to purchase for $149.00 an extension of my warranty (from date of purchase) to cover an additional year from date of purchase of warranty (not of product) which sounded silly to me because my 24-month limited warranty (per their program) will cover me until May 2009. If I purchase the extension now, the coverage will start counting from today so it will last until Sept 29, 2009. The difference then would be an additional coverage of 4 months from May 2009 (orig 24-month warranty expires). No way I would pay $149 for that short extension!!! I might just buy a new non-HP laptop next.

I purchased my DV6000 July, 2007 with a 2 year warranty. My Wifi card stopped working today 10/1/2008, and I was covered under warranty, but regardless for those who don’t have a warranty, HP should cover all defective computers free of charge, or be subject to lawsuit. So my recommendation for those who don’t have a warranty is to call HP in Houston and speak to their service department. LETS FILE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT!!!!!
PS Apple Computer computer would not ignore this….Think of purchasing Apple products in the future.
October 2nd, 2008 at 5:01 am
I had the same problem. And it started happening the first day of school. So the random time i was able to get on the internet, for SOME ODD reason my computer took me directly to the HP website and it said “if your computer is experiencing the following symptoms, call this number.” i did, the guy took me through a few steps for that BIOS thing, didn’t work and then sent me a box to send it to HP where it is currently being fixed. The fan thing, is that was it would get RIDICULOUSLY hot on my lap to the point it was very uncomfortable?

I purchaced my dv6000 and four months into it card went out with warranty motherboard had to be replaced. Oddly, sis-in-law’s laptop same series card went too but unfortunally her warranty ran out.

I guess we all belong to the same club. I just got off the phone and am waiting for my box to arrive from HP. I bought my HP DV6000 June07 and the guy on the phone more or less told me that the motherboards are defective and need to be replaced. he said there would be no charge, sure, they already have me by the gonads..we shall see
October 6th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
So does anyone know when you send it away to HP does it come back to you minus all your files? My motherboard crashed to the point were I couldn’t even turn the darn thing on. I’m going through circut city because I got their extended warrenty (which was a huge waste of money). They wanted $100 to back up my files; (which i couldn’t do myself because my computer was so messed up even before the final crash). So now either I shell out 100 i don’t have or loss my files? >_< all companies stink.
October 7th, 2008 at 9:54 am
been having the same problems, then the damn thing just wouldnt even boot up any more. called hp told them what was happening and they said sure send it in well fix it for free under their extended warranty enhancement program. so the box arrives and i send it in. i had been keeping track of it on their site and it said under warranty $0.00 owed. then i check it the other day and it said out of warranty and i owe $318.00. so i call hp and after an hour of b.s. they tell me the optical drive went out and that they wanted $318.00 to replace it. now i had no problem with the drive before so i pretty much tell them i dont believe them and that i would like them to fix the laptop and return it. so i check the site later that day and it says in warranty $0.00 owed, great right. wrong i get the laptop back and not only does it still not work, the optical drive makes this horrible noise now. so thanks hp for standing by your crappy products.
October 10th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
mine was purchased on 08/04/06 and will be getting fixed with same problems no wireless and video. you can get video back by taking battery out and holding power for 30 secs. however just call and get them to fix asap. also try to back up your hard drive if you can get video back because they will be wiping the hard drive.
October 14th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Took me hrs of lookin on the internet to get this exceptionally useful info. on an obscure website.
Well im going to try and get it fixed but i would recomend to anyone that gets it back in working condition to sell it asap at a loss and get something of decent quality and never get a hp ever again. guess it pays to research your purchase and not get the newest un-tested product out there. get something a year old and tested. Now get your old laptop out out and upgrade it untill it’s waaay to old, then get one a year old someday. Thats my plan.
DOWN WITH HP

I have the same problem guys, and my dv9612ca is still in warranty, having bought it in march 2008. The thing is my bluetooth works perfectly ever since i bought, but the wifi just appears once every two months and then disappears.(strange having considered they are both part of the same module). My BIGGEST problem yet is that i live in Romania, and although there’s an HP hq here, the guys at the shop told me they’d have to send it in the US so solve the problem.. and that would take a few weeks only for transportation. my question is: what kind of external wifi adapter could i connect to it so i can get it to work wireless?
October 20th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Absolutely, positively, DON’T buy HP. Same problem here…1 month out of warranty. Did I mention Absolutely, positively, DON’T buy HP.

I have an HP dv6000 notebook. HP officially announced that they have extended warranties on the series because of the issues. This includes a full motherboard replacement. I sent mine in, and now the wireless and screen issues have been resolved. However, HP will not cover battery issues. Hope this helps.

I got also dv6000 , bought on sept 07, first problem had after 6 mounths with video, like everybody alse had that same shitty problem with no screen, was black – 3 beeps and thats it..i mail my lapp to hp, they changed mb for no cost ( i had warranty that time) and then 6 mounths was all right. Now is Nov 08…i have wifi problem…i dont even know what to say, maybe only that i will never ever buy Hp, its very important to me coz i using my lap everyday to work…my warranty now is out – thats why i need your advice, should i just try that USB wifi adapter or maybe Belkin N Wireless ExpressCard Adapter ? i dont want it mail them again even for no cost when they will saying after that i had issue with optical drive and charge 350$ (they trying rip-off money for nothing ) ..so whats the best way to resolve this problem with wifi ?
November 15th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
i’ve had this problem also, no dont buy another wireless card. just reformat your pc. trust me it works i did it today and im no longer had a wire connected to my pc to receive the internet.
November 17th, 2008 at 4:19 am
Having exactly the same issues. DV6000 series HP laptop, bought two years ago. Already had one free repair while under warranty about 12 months after purchase due to hard drive failure (computer would not boot, blank screen, making beeping noises), had a free repair done. Worked fine for another twelve months then stopped working. Had some issues (error messages, unprompted re-starts etc) which may have been due to conflicts between anti-virus systems. Now the wireless network has gone COMPLETELY MIA. The wireless network is switched on and working (blue light on manual switch and bluetooth and wireless device on screen) but no bloody WLAN anywhere in sight. Did system restore, destructive restore/reconfig etc, re-loaded everything, have the latest BIOS, updated and re-loaded all possibly related drivers off teh HP site but no luck!!! HP need to take some responsibility and recall the wireless hardware and software responsible for the issue, even for those who are no longer under warranty – I agree that consumers should have a fair expectation of getting at least 5 years yuse out of a laptop – the existing situation is absolutley rediculous!! Some accountability please!!!!

Our HP dv6000 won’t connect to the Internet since Oct. Tech support at a major university can’t fix it. There is a second notebook, same model, with same problem at the university. Errors receive include “not detecting correct IP” and “problem with one or more network adapters on this computer.” Hardware check indicates network adapter card is working properly. Runs on Vista, SP1. Boots up, but no luck in connecting either via Ethernet or wireless. Also, tried Mozilla instead of IE. It is a couple of months past warranty. Any suggestions as to Root Cause of this problem–motherboard or reformat PC?
November 25th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
I have had DV6103 for two years and about 6months ago it just died. I have replaced the hard drive and still no luck. Mine is not covered in the warranty enhancement and have called multiple times with no luck. I will never buy anything HP ever again. These laptops DV series are horrible products and full of defects , as matter of fact all HP products are lowsy.

I had more trouble than WiFi the whole mother board is recalled. The HP AMD dv mother boards are recalled. Make sure you take plenty of pictures of your system prior to shipping because the HP Recall Service Tech that I encountered butchered my board. My WiFI never worked.. however this new board.. the wifi works but not he video fails randomly, usually when the core and the video are at peak. then Click the machine turns off. Check out he photos at http://www.ElectronicCarpenter.com/photos

Hi,
I am wondering is this a problem only with AMD or same with Intel too. I am having Intel and facing a problem of not getting connected to internet although the wireless adaptor is getting detected and trying to get connected. not sure what could be the problem?
Thanks

Wow I just read through most of these posts. I have had the exact same problem (Wireless Not Working) on my HP Pavillion dv6305 plus more. I have had it for about a year and a half. The screen flickers whenever move it. I cant keep it in certain positions or it wont light up. And today this morning I tried to turn on my laptop and it would not turn on at all. I tried again, and it turned on. 5 seconds later it tuns off and restarts. Then 5 seconds later it does the same. So I did some research online and found this article. I called HP Customer Service and some lady answered. She listened to my complaining and finally told me that I would be getting it repaired for free because this is a commong problem and it is covered under some extended warranty. I was only on the phone for about 15 minutes so I’m beyond happy to have sorted this problem out.

DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER: 1-800-474-6839 x93. It is the HP COMPLAINT DEPT. The man who handles those phone calls is not willing to provide any support. He listens to your complaint and tells you NO.
Best answer, do not buy any more HP products and hope that people who work for that company do not leave and infect other companies.
Sadly – I remember when HP first started – it was a trash name like Radio Shack TRS-80 and to no suprise – it still is.

I got my HP laptop a year and a half ago. A few moths bck, my wireless stopped working and a month back I experienced another problem. Whenever I swtiched on the notebook, the lights turned on but the notebook kept on restarting.During all this time, the screen was blank. I gave it to a nearby tech guy. He opened it, changed a few parts, but no success. He put the parts back. I finally contacted the HP SUpport Centre and got to know about their limited warranty. They told me it was a manufacturing fault. I am going to send my notebook to them. I hope thet wont have an issue with the fact that I had already tried to resolve the problem myself.
December 4th, 2008 at 2:02 am
I had my DV6000’s mother board replaced 3x some months after purchasing it. The first two were replaced with the same worthless motherboard. On the third time, i noticed that the drivers had changed so i assumed HP replaced it with something else. Plus i made a switch from Windows Vista to Ubuntu. Ubuntu 8.04 works like a charm in my DV6000, not to mention i do not have to worry about viruses anymore
December 9th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Yay. I got my laptop back today. So in all, it was a total of one week from calling to receiving it back. It was so quick and painless. I got the box to send it in last Wednesday and did not send it back until Thursday. And early this morning the FedEx guy shows up at my door with my laptop. Everything is back to normal again.
I was surprised to see that they upgraded it from a DV6305 to a DV6400 (Honestly, I have no idea what those numbers mean but I know they upgraded it and that makes me happy lol
) I also got a new power cord thing too. I hope it doesn’t crap out on me again…

Hewlett Packard is one of the most prominent manufacturers of notebook computers today, and any trip to Best Buy will make that abundantly clear. Well, as of this writing, one of the notebook PCs they have on sale right now at Best Buy is the HP Pavilion DV6000. I picked one up a couple months ago for $800. I was in Best Buy a couple weeks ago and it was on sale for $749. So, this is certainly an affordable notebook PC
December 15th, 2008 at 4:47 am
We had the same issues everyone is talking about, first the display failed about 6 months ago. We sent in the computer for a replacement MB. Now three weeks ago the wireless stopped working, I put a USB wireless card in, now Friday night the thing will not boot, it will not even go into a bios start up, just sits there with the blue lights cycling on and then off. I spoke with Tech Support and they were all set to send out the box so that I could send it in for repair, but then they said, we already had the motherboard replaced, and that that repair was only warrantyed for 90 days….He then said it would be between $300 and $900 to repair, but he really could not say any more….Is there still a plan for class-action suit? What is the next step with these issues? Is anyone getting satisfaction?
December 16th, 2008 at 12:29 am
O.o i didnt realize so many people had the same problem!!! i bought my DV6125se in november of 06 (black friday @best buy). started having issues around the 10th month with speakers fritzing out and wireless card working occasionally. the problem got worse and i sent it into HP for a free fix (replacement of motherboard) and everything seemed to work…
for a while……
then the same thing happened! but only this time the wireless stopped working ALMOST COMPLETLY! the speakers are driving me nuts again!! AND now the usb drives are going bad.
screams motherboard, right??
only this time i dont have the warranty… i just was on the live chat and practly exploded at the poor hp representative because of how furious i am over the matter. all i can tell you of the results i got is that threatening lawsuits works…… they are sending me a box
if the chances to get one are 1 in 7, the chances to get a third faulty motherboard are 1 in 293…. pray for me…. or them…

I have a DV6000. NOt only the wifi dead, but also the video card (twice), the on/off button, the speakers and the firewire connection. Of course, this all happened after the warranty expired except for the first failure of the video card. HP no more….

Does anyone know if they replace it with the exact same hardware? Since I read that it’s a defect of design, they would need to replace it with a piece of hardware designed differently in order for the exact same problem to not happen again.
If all they do is stick the same part in there and update the bios so that the machine runs a little differently, then the exact same problem will occur only it will wait until it is out of warranty to fail.
Someone please update this for us, do they put in a part that is designed better? Also, do they always swap out a working optical drive for a defective one?

My HP Pavilion DV6000 had intermittent problems from the time we got it last year. It got so hot we couldn’t touch it. Then beginning Dec. 28 it wont start up at all just beeps with blue lights then shuts down.
Called HP support and got notice that it was 8 days out of warranty and will cost $400 to replace motherboard.
They assure me that my product is not covered by the extended 24 month warranty. At this point I’d be satisfied to pull the hard drive. How can I recover the data from the drive? I’ve never replaced a laptop drive. Any suggestions are appreciated.
What is the ebay market like for used laptops with decent 15.4in screens and busted motherboards?

I called HP last night, I have had my pavillion dv6000 for 2 years and yes out of warranty used it fine yesterday morning then last night went to get on it and nothing but a black screen kept restarting itself. When I first got it I had to send it off because it would not find the wireless so they fixed that, this is so uncalled for from HP, they tell me it will not cost me anything because of the recall on the motherboard we will see. I had noticed the last little bit that it kept getting extremely hot its like the fan is not even working so i went and got one of the coolers to set it on to keep it cool. My problem is I can’t back anything up it gives me an error saying backup failed HP purchase and I agree wait until one is a year old that way all the bugs are worked out HOPEFULLY!!! Would appreciate any help.
Best wishes and best of luck to the rest of you and the ones to come.

HP dv6000 sucks big time. I got mine May 2007 running fine until of course the warrenty had expired. Ive had problems for the last few months with the screen freezing and no alternaltive but to switch it off. It started doing this more often then when switching back on the screen would be black and not do anything. Finally about two weeks ago when I was turning it on the screen remained blank and it bipped a couple of times. I called HP in saudi where I live and they said I need to back up hd and then call them back to reinstall everything. I went to a computer shop to see what they could do to salvage my hd. Luckily the hd was ok but the mother board was the problem. I left the laptop with the for a few days to see if it could be repaired. When I returned it was fixed due to the fact a mother board was unavailable in saudi and they had called hp to find out if they could get one from them and they said it wasnt available in saudi. COME ON HP DONT SELL A COMPUTER THAT YOU CANT GET PARTS FOR IN THE COUNTRY YOU SELL THEM. Also lost my wireless connection about a year ago I work in a compound that has IT service for home net and they blamed me for deleting my wireless connection so I had no idea until now that Hp knew there was an ongoing issue with wireless with hp laptops. After reading all the responses I dont think its worth getting it fixed I will buy a new laptop but NEVER EVER WILL BUY A HP AGAIN AND WILL TELL EVERYONE I KNOW NOT TO!!

Good post. Thanks for info!
After reading, I called HP regarding a dv6000 laptop exhibiting the WLAN issue (light always glowing amber). The machine was out of warranty, but I was told affected machines are still eligible for a “one-time service enhancement”. Before the tech offered to send out the box, they had me reseat the LAN card (located just beneath the center panel on the bottom of the machine, identified by two connecting wires). Now a box is on its way and should arrive in 2 business days.
Note: Before calling HP I tried flashing the BIOS to version F.3D, but it didn’t resolve the issue with the WLAN access.

It’s been awhile since i’ve use my desktop. I guest that’s a good thang. But, for the worse my hp pavillion dv6000 laptop wireless, cdrom/dvd slimtype, and internet modem connection isn’t working as of today. My laptop hp advisor says the connection is good, but theres no website connection so therefore it’s the laptop. My desktop get it’s connection. I had my dv6000 for 1yr/7mos. and now my baby is dead gone. I have no warranty now, but thinking of a repurchase. So to say: “I am in the river with all of you”. Drowning in hp failures. Once a year and seven months ago i felt Hp stood for “Happy People”. Now i say ” Having Problems”. I went to my system configuration file to see has any component failed, checked problem devices. I realized my motherboard wasn’t showing up. So i looked into my hidden component file and found it wasn’t working. Now i’m really “f” about it. I guess that explains everthing about it. But it isn’t over yet to say. I gets mines and hope you get yours also best of luck to use to be “Happy People” that’s “Having Problems”.

I purchased a DV6000 right after graduating from high school since I knew I’d need a laptop for college. This laptop is the biggest piece of crap I have ever owned and I would do anything to just get me $900 back. Within three months, the bearing on the fan had gone out, and HP customer service pretty much did me up the ass and then told me I was SOL. It says in my warranty that any HP dealer can fix my laptop — great, so I run it around to Circuit City, Best Buy, and a few local places. CC and BB tell me that they can’t fix it under my warranty, just ship it off. Local places? Wont TOUCH HP computers. I was fortunate enough to have a friend who is wonderful with computers, helped me find and order a new fan and heatsink and replaced it all for me. Oh, and HP wanted to charge $150+ for the heatsink and I got it for less than $25. Problem solved and it took less than an hour — which by the way HP quoted me one and a half to two months. I use the computer for school and work — I cannot be without it that long. Fan is fixed but the computer always has and always will run very, very hot. I’m not going anywhere near HP customer service ever again — the people I dealt with were either incredibly rude, didn’t speak english, or think that BIOS can fix everything. No thank you.
Now my wireless is failing and I don’t know what the heck to do. I’m not dealing with HP anymore. I’d kill to have my money back and give it all to another company — and my experience with them was so bad that I will never ever recommend HP to anyone ever again, if anything I will do my best to steer people away.

I have the same Wireless (not detected) issue as well. It has been going on for the past few months, and I just located the service enhancement page thanks to this site. (why doesn’t HP contact people who have purchased this system and are registered with them?). I just contacted them and they will be sending me a a repair package for this known issue and will repair it free of charge as detailed under the enhancement warranty.
I just hope they repair the board and don’t touch anything else (ie; lcd display, DVD, hard drive, etc..) I have heard horror stories about people getting their laptops repaired only to get a “repaired” system back that is full of refurbished garbage that was worse then what they sent their systems in for.
My only issue is the wireless, and I could easily use a usb wi-fi adapter ($40), but as others have stated that is only the first issue to start and the Motherboard is next to go, so I am sending this sucker in.
I hope all goes well.

So this is the problem..i have had my dv6016, amd processor with the nvidia g-whatever 3D card..since november 06 with a one year international warranty. I purchased it in the middle east but have now moved back to australia, and it has given me one head ache after another. Firstly the wireless stopped working after 2 weeks, and so i contacted HP. By the time i took it to the service center, it had already started working so i let it be. 3 months after i moved down here, the wireless started acting up, but i found that turning it off for 20 mins set it right. It was only a month later, before a big exam of mine, i turned it on only to realize that monitor was not working. After connecting to an external monitor, i realized that the problem was worse. So i took it to a service center

So i took it to a service center and they said 14 working days. After 14 days, i called and they informed me that they had bought the wrong parts and needed to order more parts and another 14 days went by. It was finally fixed, and i took it home, only to see that, every time i turned it on, it turned of. Realizing that something was wrong with the fan, i took it back. They then informed me that they had installed it wrong, and after 3 more days i finally got it back. 10 months went by, now the laptop no longer under warranty, and i get the same issue again. This time i was back in the middle east on holiday. So i took to a sevice agent and again, they ordered parts, but said it was unavailable in the country and they had to order it. it took about 4 weeks but again i got it back. This time i payed $600 out of pocket. Now it is 26 months from the time i purchased it, and it has happend again. No screen blackout, but wireless dropping out and overheating. Over the last couple of months, my power on button has stopped working, so i turn it on by pressing the quikplay button and then clicking on the windows button. Also my sound stopped working. I have to always plug it in to an external speaker. The only way i connect to the internet is through an ethernet connection. Over the last couple of days when i play games, fifa 2009, every 10 to 15 mins, the computer freezes and nothing responds. Cant turn it off without pulling out the battery. The battery overheats and i have to use a heat mat because it is really really hot, and the battery life, a most 30 mins. The dvd drive is useless. Even the slightest of movement and the dvd drive pops out, so i have to set it on a table to watch a movie. SO MUCH FOR A LAPTOP. So now im going to call hp and see what they are going to do. I also have to call my brother, who is a lawyer, because legal action is how i am going to proceed if HP does not repair my laptop and reimburse my last repair, or give me a new laptop altogether. The thing is, after all this, i still love my laptop and would love to have it back in one piece, or better still, get my hands on one of those DVX machines..they are real sweet. I have checked, my laptop is on the list for eligability for free repair, but it is outside the stipulated 24 months.
Guys, all the best with your Dv laptops, hopefully HP realizes where it was wrong and does something about it.Cheers

I have a question–does anyone have trouble with the USB ports? Like everyone I’ve alked with HP but they say the dv6000 doesn’t have trouble with the USB ports, but the tech guy said the motherboard burned them up? HELP. With the economy in the shitter, you’d think HP would get some American’s working and help the American’s who bought their product. This India crap sucks!
January 12th, 2009 at 8:16 am
I got one for Christmas. What the heck? It randomly decides to disconnect me from the internet. It picks and chooses when it wants its wireless on. It’s a good computer and all, I am just very disappointed in its wireless capability. And can anyone help me get my webcam working?
January 12th, 2009 at 9:00 am
My dv6000 just died during a back-up to an external hard drive. Apparently the hard drive is toast. I’ve just lost all of my work since my last back-up. I will never buy another HP product again. This machine is less than 2 years old. Poor quality and very slow.

ALL I WANTED TRULY WAS MICROSOFT OFFICE REINSTALLED AND HP TOLD ME NO, IT WAS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO STILL HAVE MY OLD DISK . i CALLED CORPORATE AND TALKED TO AN EXECUTIVE AND HE SAID IT HAPPENS AND THERE IS NOTIHNG HE CAN DO FOR ME, AND AFTER 30 MINUTES OF DISCUSSIONS WITH HIM HE SAID HE DID NOT CARE IF I EVER BOUGHT ANOTHER HP PRODUCT OR NOT , WOW SOME WAY TO TREAT YOUR CUSTOMERS RIGHT ? I got my HP Pavilion DV6000 for Christmas 2006. Never had a problem with it. Right before Christmas 2008, I got a virus. After a few days, it was cleared up but then the wireless went out. A few more tech savvy friends of mine tried to fix it over the course of the Christmas season but no luck. On 1/10/09, we started doing online research and found out about the HP issue and how they are fixing the problem. I contact HP through HP chat and gave them my serial number. They told me the offer for my notebook expired 1/1/09. WTF?! They basically told me sorry and that there was nothing they could do. They also pointed out I could pay them almost $300 for them to fix the problem. URGH. They said they sent out emails to registered customers but I never got one. I’m very pissed. Any suggestions? I’m currently looking at USB wireless adapters, but hate how far they stick out.

Hello all, my name is Dennis and my sons laptop has a problem with the WLAN. We encountered this problem a few months after we purchased it. HP support had me reseed the WLAN, and it worked temporarily. The second time HP support had me reseed the card again, and once again a temporary fix. It happened a third time but lucky me, the warranty had expired. No they want me to purchase a 1yr phone support contract or for me to send it in for repair but I’ll get charged. I explained to them that is it a manufacturer deffect with many dv6000, and they should fix it for free but after two attempts, they have declined. HP, YOU SHOULD BE A SHAME OF YOURSELF FOR SELLING DEFFECTIVE EQUIPMENT. (My LG tv broke because of a manufacturer deffect with the power supply, and LG fixed it for free, even though my warranty was expired for a whole year). I do not have the money to send it in for repair, and my son is stuck with a broken laptop.
Just wanted to share my experiance with HP.
January 24th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
I fell the same way, what a shame HP!!!First, sent in first to fix video, now, won’t boot, quick play does not work, and i already sent twice to fix at Best Buy, they called me to deliver it as repaired, then contacted HP thru e mail, they asked me to pay $ 280.00 plus parts, what a heck, i just purchase another laptop ACER, NEVER BUY HP AGAIN!!!

February 1st, 2009 at 8:43 pm
Same problems as everyone else. Purchased mine in 121/06. Started having problems Summer of 07. By Spring 08 it would turn on and shut off repeatedly, called got a free fix as offered by website. Box arrived, mailed it back to HP. It was returned within the week and worked great. 3 months later speakers won’t work, called HP and was told it was 3 days out of warranty for the free fix that was suppose to fix everything. I just decided to live with it since I mostly use headphones and that still worked. Jan 1, 09 internet (WLAN) icon disappears and I get kicked off. Call HP who is so sorry but I am past the extended warranty. I beg, plead, get s supervisor who is now gonna get me a case manager who will call me during the week.
Do I have a chance at getting this &^%$#Laptop fixed? I used it 2 years and 2 months. I will be a real pain and threaten to tell all my students in all my classes NEVER BUY HP unless they agree to repair their faulty merchandise. Will keep you posted.

Just got a call from hp case manager. Extremely nice woman will be mailing my FedX box for me to return my laptop in today!!!

Does anyone know why my HP DV 6409 US is not a part of the recall when my laptop has been sent to HP for repairs for the following symptoms:
-There is no video on the computer LCD panel or external monitor
-The external monitor functions but there is no image on the notebook LCD panel
HP has suggested on several occasiasons to update the BIOS and yet new problems occur. For example I have had to send the laptop in for repair two times for the hard drive to be replaced on separate occaisions. The second time the case manager asigned to my case accused me of intentionally damaging my computer and HP attempted to bill me $320.00 when I purchased an extended warranty 6 monthe earlier. This accusation only further delayed the return of a laptop with an additional problem.
When I was having problems with:
-There is no video on the computer LCD panel or external monitor
If I remember corectly they claimed it was some other problem, like the bios and that the laptop was fixed!
So now the HP DV 6409 US is possibly going on its FIFTH repair!
This is what has been repaired on the laptop:
-the lcd screen, and I am not sure why?
-TWO hard drives
-the speakers
Is anyone else having problems 4 times or more like myself and what should I expect HP to do about so many problems?
Why have’nt they replaced the motherboard on my laptop?
I am never going to buy another Hewlett Packard, I think it is time for a DELL or APPLE laptop!
Thanks For Reading
Thomas

February 17th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
i have a dv 6000, it got hit by virus. someone installed software and their was a problem with the lights on dash and sound.
i was told by hp aht it was due to corosion. i know i didnt spill water on this laptop and was not near water. they even sent me photos of some corosion on a part .. however i also doubted it was that . I got my laptop back unfixed as they said it would cost me 1081.00 dollars. that was even more insane. beyond economical repair. and when i got it back they damage key boards . it wont work . so that was bullshit to when they said they would not fix it. they held me up for a month. now it is not working in key board . however.. i reinstaled software all over correctly and the light came back on and all good with that. so hp is duping the public and corrupt. they LIED. i have not yet had problems iwth the lan.. but im afraid of what will come. my laptop is a year pluss and htey dont like to hold up to waranty.

Ok, so my dv6000 series laptop has the same wireless adapter problems. Worked for a while then stopped working all together. I went through all the same moves with software driver updates, bios update, etc. So here is the kicker… I ran a memory test on the laptop (memory diagnostic tool). When the memory test completed and the computer rebooted, the wireless adapter suddenly becomes live again after almost 6 months of coma. It works for about 3 restarts, then on the 4th restart, it dies again.
So riddle me this Batman, what the heck is going on?? Why did running the memory test bring it back and why did it suddenly crap out again?
Hope this helps somone….

Mm pavilion dv6000 had the same problem since last night. I called HP service. They said it was motherboard prblem and could be replaced with $380. But he asked me to buy a new one with $150 discount.
Is there any class act lawsuit for this problem?

I have a DV6000 and it hasn’t worked right since “day 1.” Mostly software issues (Vista) like not coming back from hybernation, or freezing up. I chatted with Microsoft for 53 minutes and they allegedly fixed the freezing problem…temporarily. I don’t have the time or energy to talk to someone around the world who is not going to help me so I left it alone because I can live with it. But now, the LAN magically dissappeared. It doesn’t show up in my device manager. Another 43 minutes spent, with HP this time, trying to figure out the problem. They had me flash the BIOS (because that is the answer to everything) and re-install the LAN’s drives. Unfortunately, this did not solve the problem. I’m hesitant to fight and send it in to HP because I’m out of warranty, and I don’t like to use the USB adapters because they’re cumbersome. I think I’ll go online and buy a new motherboard. I saw one here http://laptopparts.vivotechnology.net/items/item.aspx?itemid=796584 for $158.00, and I saw another one on eBay for $109.00. I hate to spend the money, especially after shelling out almost a grand on a new laptop, but I belive this is the cheapest, quickes fix. If you want to flash the BIOS, go here
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-562841&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=2093&product=3370282
and then you can get the drives here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-57604-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=2093&product=3370282
I’ll try it out and I’ll keep you all posted. Good luck to us all!

Echoing the bitter complaints, I was wondering if anyone else had an HP dv6565 laptop with these WLAN issues (my laptop also has an amber light instead of blue, saying WLAN is disabled when the heck it shouldnt be) After reading the extended warranty announcement http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01087277&lc=en&cc=us I happily *cough* found out that my product is NOT included in the extended warranty program although I have EXACTLY the problems described…..What complete BS!#!%^@*( Is there anyone else in this boat and is there any way to get it included in the warranty? I mean its a dv6000 for crap sakes – back up you products HP!!!
February 27th, 2009 at 10:51 am
Hello all,
Where to start? Well, ive had numerous issues with my HP Pavilion dv6000 (6058cl) and today marks the two year anniversary of owning this piece of crap! Thank god that i have not had any video issues, but instead, Ive encountered the wireless card issue. So like most, i contacted HP, and discovered this is a known motherboard issue. I too talked with a case manager who stated that im out of warranty by a few months and they would charge me to fix it. Why should we as customers have to pay for a manufacturer’s defective product? For example, if your neighbors child throws a rock and breaks your window, should you have to pay for this? Absolutely not! I ended up not sending it in for repair, but purchasing an exterior USB wireless adapter at Best Buy ( Ill explain later in the post).
I am an Best Buy employee (part-time) and i can guarantee you that i will warn all customers about HP products, customer support..etc because this is just ridiculous. I feel robbed from the company and will be expressing my feelings in a negative effect towards HP.
If your wireless adapter fails due to the motherboard, run down to Best Buy and purchase a USB wireless adapter BUT DO NOT USE THE CD, just just allow windows to search online and find the necessary divers for the adapter.
( What to do when you call HP) : If any of you call HP, demand to speak with a CASE MANAGER as that is the only person who can override the cost to make it free. Explain that it is their fault for this issue and that if they will not pay for it, you are willing to sue them. Sounds crazy but its the truth and explain that you are willing to take these extreme manners because you feel you purchased a KNOWN DEFECTIVE UNIT. If thousands of people are having this people, you could have a class action suit against them; plain and simple!
I end with this; HP = never again. look at others : Sony, Dell, and MAC

Had the same problem as all the complaints above. Hp actually fixed it twice and the second time my dv6000 was out of warranty but asked to speak to supervisior and was told fedex would ship a box overnight…had it back in less then a week. The motherboard was replaced twice but I’m happy to say hp was very nice and fixed my laptop asap. It’s been awhile now and my dv6000 is running like new. Good luck to you all and don’t give up on the first call…If I don’t like who’s speaking down to me I hang up and call again.

I contacted HP today 16MAR09. They told me that the extended warranty for this known issue is over as of Feb. 09. That I was basically out of luck. So I talked to a supervisor that said the same thing. My issue is that if they do not notify anyone of this issue and we have to find out on our own how can the extended warranty to cover this issue have an end date. Not cool and I will not purchase another HP product.

DV 6095EA – HP Laptop bought Sept 06
I’m having same problems, 1st wouldn’t come out of hibernate, then wireless went -now can’t even get anything on screen for 3 months.
HP said outside 2 year extended warrenty and go back to seller (Comet UK).
Various problems with COMET who will only take approx £70 off a repair bill : leaving me with £200 to pay if I want it fixed. I could by another non HP Notebook for nearly same price!!
I thinking of going to Small Claims Court for redress – has anybody else gone to court. please let me know. Cheers
March 25th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Go to moneyclaimonline.co.uk for small claims.. its takes littel long but works for sure….
March 28th, 2009 at 7:10 am
I WILL NOT BUY ANY HP PRODUCT ANYMORE!!!
Same problem here. DV6000 series notebook (DV6189eu). Wireless has gone first, then the notebook do not boot up, restarts over and over again with no display on the screen. We sent it to service, and HP said that they changed the mobo. At first, we were happy with the quick service. But then we realized that they changed the mobo with another broken mobo since the same problem occurred after 1 week.
Calling the service here in Turkey, HP tells us that it is out of warranty, and if you want to fix it, you have to pay.
I WILL NOT BUY ANY HP PRODUCT ANYMORE!!!
They do not manufacture anything, they just buy products and assemble. The RAM inside is a Samsung, HDD is a Toshiba etc.. HP should be nothing but a service company. And the reason behind buying an HP is their service quality. However, I see that they cannot even manage to provide a high quality service.
I WILL NOT BUY ANY HP PRODUCT ANYMORE!!!

I have been extremely upset. My HP laptop is out of warrenty but that doesn’t make me feel any better. Most of the HP 6000’s are being recalled but not my model…..My computer keeps freezing and then shutting down improperly. I have already spent over 200 dollars to try and fix the computer. Now, as a result of shutting down improperly, my computer won’t even boot up. It is a piece of junk that I paid over 1,000 dollars for and HP could care less. I plan on going to small claims court because even though a product is out of warrenty, if a product has faulty equipment, then the company should make good on that product and this is definetely a fault of the product. I think we should all ban together and shout out to HP that we will not tolerate this nonsense….We are consumers and desearve well made products…If HP won’t back their products than it’s up to the consumers to insist on it….After work today, I will be filing a claim
March 31st, 2009 at 7:28 pm
This shit is OUTRAGEOUS…. My wireless switch worked a little bit a few weeks ago. I just had to flip it back and forth really hard and it turned blue a couple times. But now, absolutely nothing. The motherboard thing. Does anybody have an HP phone number of someone who actually speaks English so i won’t feel bad about cursing and can maybe get me a free or cheap repair or my god damn money back?
March 31st, 2009 at 8:32 pm
PS. BIOS is worthless. Was anybody able to get a free repair whos product number was NOT on the extended warranty list??? If so, how did you go about getting it?
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:06 pm
I am having same problem, laptop not included in enhanced warranty program, but still need solution….
Anybody had any luck with HP?
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:59 pm
Have the same problem (wireless crapped out, switch not turning blue).
Called HP at 800-474-6836
From what I understand standard manufacturing warranty is a year, but for this particular problem they have added an extra enhanced year. Lucky for me, I just made it in.
After some unsuccessful troubleshooting over the phone they said they would fix it at no charge.
They’re sending the box.

Similar Thing happened to me. Another VERY COMMON HP MoBo Issue.
at boot 3 beeps 1 long 2 shorts (and not only mine as i can see around the web). HP solved the issue substituting the motherboard. i’ve used it for another 1 year and last week i had exactly the same issue: 3 beeps (1 long 2 shorts) no video!! I’ve contacted HP Customer Care and they said me that that i was not eligible for a free replacemnet as i was in the past year!! They said that they are not responsable about this issue concerning that my P/N is not on the ELIGIBLE LIST. How could be possible with a P/N that THEY gave me in substitation of the defected one that i had? It is unacceptable that HP don’t take care about a problem that they do selling this DEFECTED BOARDS on different models around the world!!
(f##k)
Listen…
I’ve bought the HP Pavilion DV6146eu notebook at the end of 2006. After 1 year, exactly on jan 2008, my laptop become unusable due to this terrible issue that affected my pc: BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH
I’m feeling frustrated and i think that it is not the right way to support people who bought HP products and had problems due to known engeneering malfunctions!!!
Regards and ENJOY with HP Products

My laptop began to display the wlan issue 6 months back but thanks to the extended warranty i got it repaired back then for free.
Now I am facing issues including
battery charging,
1 long beep 2 short beeps issue,
and the drive cant write dvds or cds anymore.
I m surprised with the problems in the dv2000 dv6000 and so on series.
How can we sue HP???
April 16th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
Just had to replace the motherboard on my dv6058 because the video went out, now the wlan is acting up. Lucky for me I got the extended warranty for twelve bucks. Was cheap insurance.
April 17th, 2009 at 6:14 pm
I had the same problem with WLAN wireless adapter disappearing. After arguing with HP online chat support and refusing to accept their response of…
HP: “before troubleshoot i would like you to tell your warrenty has been expired so would you like to extend your warrenty?”
My response: “ok well i know for a fact that this issue is covered under the hp limited warranty service enhancement for 24 months after the start of the original limited warranty”
HP: i just conformed you that your warenty has been expired
ME: i disagree, can I talk to a supervisor?
HP: HP gives only 1 year warranty with the Notebook and then you have to pay and extend the warranty
Me: but they have a 24 month service enhancement for this problem
HP: the problem you are facing with this issue it is not coverd with service enhancement which is covered by
Me: it says hp has identified a hardware issue….symptoms: notebook does not detect wireless networks and the wireless adapter is not detected….that is from hp site……this is covered under service enhancement….i wont argue about it anymore but if this does not fix the problem i will be making a phone call next time
HP: do not worry …..we will take your laptop for service
Me: and then what bill me?
HP: we are taking your laptop free of charge
And the chat went on a little longer with a supervisor…I sent them my laptop Tuesday and received it back today(very quick)….they replaced: system board, thermal pad and cable. So far so good…but I wont hold my breath, I have a feeling this isn’t the last of my problems…to be continued!!
April 19th, 2009 at 4:54 am
Both my wife and myself had a HP ‘pavilion’ laptops, bought in 2007. Both comps are dead right now (permanent sleep mode). She bought new Toshiba last month, I’m close to purchase one. From now on, HP doesn’t exist for me anymore.
April 21st, 2009 at 7:05 am
My DV6000 has worked great for almost two years and now the WiFi doesn’t work. Originally I thought it was XP SP3 so I uninstalled it. Recently I worked out how to get WiFi to work with SP3 on other computers, just not my dv6000. Well I have the time and energy to help anyone with getting justice on this issue. Let me know and I am in. I searched some class action sites, but this does not seem to be on the cards…….yet.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
I’ve gotta say, I’m a convert. My wife has had success with HP in the past, but my dv6000 is a terrible piece of work. I’ve got to imagine that eventually making faulty computers will catch up with HP. Toward that end, here are a few terms for the search engines to capture:
Hewlett-Packard, Hewlett Packard, poor quality, worthless, bad wireless card, wireless problems. fraught with problems, not worth it, headache, not as good as Apple, poor service, unusable, unreliable, dishonest, buy apple instead.
May 3rd, 2009 at 12:17 pm
If this is the case, this will be my third motherboard in probably four years. I am seriously sick and tired of this crap. I wan’t hp to do something about this. Maybe reimburse my parents the cost of the the thing. (They bought it, not me) and I want to move to a different brand altogether. UGH.
May 4th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
is it going to be worth it to change a wireless radio network card, will the wireless go back out again a short time later, or is it just buying time?
May 9th, 2009 at 8:31 am
OMG!!! I have always bought HP products, but i am quickly becoming an HP “hater”!!! I hve the HP Pavilion dv6327d Notebook that I purchased 7-2007. It statred getting super hot and overheating about 4-5 months after ourchase, the AC adapter felt like it was on fire. I called HP and had it replace 3x’s in 4 month…it kept over heatiing. Finally in the 12th month, right beofre the warranty was getting ready to expire, the mother board went bad and HP replaced it! Well, 3 weeks ago, it my VISTA would’nt authenticate and I thought I had a virus….but I run Verizon’s Internet Security Suite. I took it to my local comouter workshop and they dropped the bomb on me…my hard drive needed to be replaced….$260 later…I needed VISTA re-installed. The AC adapter is againing running like fire and the fan is obviously running ot too! I swear I might throw this LAPTOP OUT THE WINDOW IN A MINUTE!!!!

I have the same wireless connection problem. My laptop is almost 2 years old (purchased 7-07) and I haven’t had any problems until yesterday. The computer was working fine and then when I tried to go online I did not have a wireless connection. My husband spent 2 days trying to fix the problem, updated drivers, updates BIOS (as recommended) but nothing worked. He did go to Wal-mart and buy me a Linxsys USB adapter so I could use my computer. After reading the posts I decided to call HP and inform them of the problem. I did state that I was informed that the motherboard was defective and recalled for this reason. After taking the S/N and P/N and running a few quick tests the representative stated that he would be sending me a postage paid box to send my laptop in for repair free of charge. He also informed me to back up all files and programs because the computer will be completely wiped clean when I receive it back.
Although the USB adapter is working I was just not happy that I had to add something to my computer just to go online wirelessly when the problem is clearly an HP problem.
If you are having this problem and decide to call HP try to keep your patience and be nice…It worked for me! Good luck.
HP #1-866-671-7362 they are there 7 days a week untill 11:00 MST
June 21st, 2009 at 11:23 am
Same problem with HP 6100 laptop purchased in 2007. I bought the extended warranty also – but it’s over 4 months ago. Staples says it’s the motherboard and it is on the HP product recall list. I called HP tech support & they say that since the warranty’s expired they will not fix it at their expense. It’ll be $350+ to fix it. I will never buy a HP/Compaq computer again. How can they get away with such terrible customer service? If anyone is planning a class action lawsuit – I’m in too! Contact me pconway@prodigy.net.

DV6000 is a fancy and nice computer, that I admit , but the way it gives problems. Mine gives one long beep and two short once when starting up and the monitor does not display but the machine comes on. I thought maybe the VGA was dead and was ready to buy new motherboard. To my surprise after two months it stared displaying again but on and of. It is out of warranty already but since HP has admitted this computers have problenms it should be in a position to help us.
June 26th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Yea hp has been so dishonest about this. They have ripped off so many customers, and lie about it like they don’t know how to tell the truth.
There are a lot of people at hplies.com that are organized in getting the laptops fixed for free, as hp should do. As long as hp keeps the customers in the dark and keeps the customers believing the lies, they will win, but as we organize, we are able to take on that crooked company. Understanding the truth, getting organized, and being persistant is what counts.

Same problem as many of you – wireless adaptor is completely gone. I’m gonna ring HP tomorrow – they should repair the issue for free, and if they don’t I shall be getting rather shitty.
Word of advice to anyone planning the same thing:
REMOVE YOUR HARD DRIVE if you want to keep your documents.
I sent it back within the warranty for that bloody screen issue and they felt the need to wipe all my documents :@
Underneath where the wireless switch is – that’s where your hard drive is. Undo those two screws and remove the cover. Hard drive just pops out
Don’t understand why they bother shipping these laptops for selling if they KNOW they don’t work, they’ll just get bad PR and hassle with this crap.
Wish me luck…lol.

To everyone that is having this wireless issue Don’t Ship your laptop away to get fixed don’t go out and spend $400 or what ever it cost to fix wireless on the dv6000 series laptops just go out and buy a wireless usb stick if its just your built in wireless on the dv6000 series laptops nothing happens to the motherboard it is safe to still use your computer also you can solve the heating by buying a cooling pad if there is anyone that wants to try my way like I did I went out and bought a $40 wireless usb stick please feel free to Send ME Any Emails cause if its just your wireless not working on your dv6000 series laptops and everthing else is working excellent then just go out buy a $40 wireless usb stick this way it saves you from sending your laptop away and having Hp charge you $400 to fix the wireless issue save that money don’t spend that mone just on that
July 4th, 2009 at 11:14 pm
hi!, I have a hp pavillion dv6000 and
I’m facing a similar dilemma with the wireless (that’s it at the moment)
and I’ve been reading all this post
so, as I see this thing is gonna getting worse
I want to sell my laptop and maybe buy another laptop or a desktop computer
so here’s the big question…
what should I do?? which laptop or deskop computer do you recommend?
coz hp no thanks haha
July 7th, 2009 at 7:56 am
Thank you for the information on the wireless issue. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with my computer. One day it was working and the next day, my wireless was gone. It took two calls to HP to get them to agree to fix it. The first time they acted like they didn’t know what I was talking about. The second time, they said they could have help me if I had called during my first year warranty period. I told them that I knew the warranty had been extended one year on this issue and they said, “well that is true” and agreed to do the repair for free. They did say it is normally $400.00 to do such a repair. Of course, they did talk me into an extended warranty to cover my computer for an additional year. Bottom line, your post saved me hundreds of dollars. Thank you
July 7th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
My wireless adaptor stopped to work two days ago. Nice, i got an update from HP Total Care Advisor until this monday, saying it was a problem with some laptop models (including mine), and they would fix it….
I called to HP and they told me my extended warranty was expired, and i had 24 months to ask for the reparation… (yes, of a problem i didn´t know that existed)
I´m in El Salvador right now, my warranty period is expired, this is not something that i´ve caused this is an issue that HP has recognized in my laptop model (Pavilion dv6215us). I´ve been calling to HP and they don´t give me a solution…
What can I do?
July 10th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
I have 3 HP’s with the same wirelss card. An F500, a DV6000, and a DV9000 series. All out of wattanty. The F500 wirless card stopped being recognized. I took a good card out of the DV6000 and put it in the F500. It would not recongize the card. I put the ‘bad’ card from the F500 in the DV6000… and it worked… So, the WiFi card was not bad. Expecting it to be something in the connection of the motherboard to the WiFi card, I put a USB wireless plug in the F500. It worked for about 5 days, and then it fried the USB plug. Bottom line, it is the motherboard. Using a USB plug may work for a while, but the motherboard is going bad from heat, and it is just a matter of time before it dies. The F500 was my teenagers, and was heavily used for games daily, and being turned off and on several times a day. My 2 DV series are turned on less than twice a week, so I expect them to last a while yet. Turning them on and off is slowly cracking a NVIDIA graphic chip.

I bought a hp dv6000 last august. I have had nothing but trouble with it! keyboard falling apart, miss typed words, wrong letter,no letter, freezes up,wireless is nuts and on and on and on! sent it in for repair…got it back with no information as what was done? so I called my (case manager) he said it was repaired they put in a new wireless card! still does all the above mentioned and I am fed up! my warrenty runs out in less than two weeks..isn’t that nice! I will never ever buy another HP product as long as I live…I don’t care if they are a dime apiece! their products are junk, their service is a joke and their support is a farce! I have a three year old dell that out performs this piece of crap 10 to 1 and trying to resolve an issue with HP is like putting a square part in a round hole! they just don’t give a damn about the customer. take it from me…buy something else! anything else! just don’t waste your time or money on HP!!!
Looks like I will end up eating this thing…but I will make it my mission to tell everyone I meet what kind of service and products HP is selling. That much I promise!!!
July 19th, 2009 at 2:05 am
hi everyone, i have the same problem i bought my dv6000 two years ago, after 14 months my wireless stop working i call hp, they send me box i send it out for repair, they replace the mother board, one monthe later stop working again, send out again repair again, now few months later and no warranty wireless stop working again, i call hp and they wont help me, unless i agree to pay for repair,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i am not,,,, i dont know want to do,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
July 23rd, 2009 at 10:53 am
Same thing here!, I just receive today my HP dv6000 from repair for a SECOND time about the same wireless issue!!!, It has bee a pain dealing with hp customer service to get it repair. I bought the laptop in July 2007, it failed in July 2008 and July 2009 failed again, so I think this laptop just will last for another year. The first time they replaced the motherboard now this time they repaired the Thermal Pad, no further explanations. Now I have a 90 days warranty for this…… We should sue HP because their lies!
July 23rd, 2009 at 11:17 pm
My Pavillion 6000 – model dv9304TX with Nvidia Ge Force Go 7600 purchased Jan 08 had motherboard replaced 7 months after purchase and under warantee. Now July 09 its out of warantee (only 3 months on new parts) and failed again this week. Before it totally went down with black screen and beeps (sending out SOS I reckon) screen said update Nvidia, check BIOS etc which I did and then it died! Calls to HP have given no joy. Cost to replace 750AUD! Plus already spent 150AUD to get diagnosis. Why should customers be expected to take out extended warantees to cover repairs on faulty products? I will not be giving them another cent.
July 29th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
I purchased my HP DV6000 in 2007 and although I don’t use it a lot I felt it was a good laptop, until now. Out of the clear blue my wireless connection has stopped working. Could be the switch, the motherboard or who knows. All I can say is at $!,000.00 + Tx for just over 2 years use makes for on damn expensive computer. Seems HP should have recalled these models or at least extended the warrany to cover this particular fault.
Since customer good will is not high on their priority I’m open to joining in on a class action law suit.
July 31st, 2009 at 12:55 am
Im like Fred above except my wireless works fine.. its my battery. It has never kept a charge nor charged correctly ever since i got the laptop (dv6000). Finally i feel like i actually wanna go mobile with this laptop (LoL) so i try to charge it and try again,.. nope still dont hold a charge. All is good though, did an online chat with hp customer care and they said they have a extended warranty on certain models (thank god) and are sending me a box to send laptop in to repair free of charge
. I was totally surprised… i thought they were going to just tell me to buy a new battery or something stupid haha. Very good customer service. Wish i woulda did it 2 years ago.
July 31st, 2009 at 1:00 am
To add to what i just wrote.. I have never had wireless problems. Been using neighbors internet for 2 years now
. Made a crossover cable to connect to my desktop which has worked awesome the whole time. Basically the laptop has been a router/modem so to speak this whole time. Now hopefully ill be able to take laptop places when i get it back
.

I am having the same problems with the MB on my HP. I have called several times and have spoked to a case manager. No luck. Had my computer crashed before March ‘09 it would have been fixed for free. Mine died on July 1st. I am very interested in a class action suit but can’t find any more information. HP knew they were selling faulty products and they are refusing to fix them unless it is out of the customer’s pocket. HP said that they contacted owners by email and through the HP Assistant…I received neither. Any help?
August 5th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
Well, I now dont feel so alone. My dv6000 series lost sound a month ago. Then, sometimes I would get sound…but, no video. Finally, this week…my wireless went out along with the LAN. No big deal…Im just going to go out and buy a new non-HP laptop tomorrow. Hope HP crashes and burns. I for one will never buy another one of their products and will tell many others the same.
August 10th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Well, guess what. Same story…DV9210US. Two months after the limited warranty ran out, the wireless quit. How is this not a class action lawsuit yet? They said they could fix it for $350, after I screamed they said they could do it for $259. I told them I would rather burn that $259 than send it their way. The battery quit working after 6 months. By the way, they had the nerve to say that I never “registered” the product. I then offered to send them the 2,000 marketing e-mails from HPService who somehow know that I have the exact model.
No way to escalate to managers / senior techs either.
Never, ever again will I buy anything from HP. Terrible service.
August 11th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
So, I have a DV6449us which was purchased in July of 2007. In early 2008, my wireless switch stopped working, so I had to send it in for repairs. When I got it back, it still didn’t work, so I had to send it in again. Later on last year, my laptop would not turn on. It kept cycling, so I returned it again. Got it back. Now my warranty just expired last month. Right after it expired, my wireless switch stopped working again.
I just called HP and they will fix it for free. But do you think they’re just gonna put the same part in, and it’s gonna mess up again? I know it’s getting fixed, but I’m afraid that it’s gonna crash again this year. And since I pre-ordered Windows 7, I hope I don’t end up just wasting it by putting it on this laptop, instead of putting it on another computer.
August 11th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
HP You have come a long long way from the good ole days when an HP 41CVX meant serious business….I had one and it rocked me through College! BUT that was then (80s) this is now….
I bought a DV6000 for my son’s birthday in late 2006. It was (I thought) the best present I have ever given anyone. Wow, HP what ever happened to you…., you so suck now! For the last two years I have fixed issues with this piece of crap that would boggle the mind… My son has lost projects he was working on for school ..several times during the years. All the problems listed above…but somehow I got it to work by sheer prayers and dances to God. The Battery sucks, the charge light is intermittent. The HP charger that this piece of crap came with gave out long ago – 90 bucks to replace too, now the Wirless card gave my son an error and That was the end of it! I swear this thing must have been engineered by monkeys in the freekin Amazon….what a piece of $^%&!!
I just got off the chat line… (If you ever want to waste two hours of your life…do it) they tell me that I can try loading the drivers…I held back:-), I was persistant that my prblem is HW so they then told me that my unit was out of warranty effective March 2009….and they would not make an exception. I would have to pay as much as a DELL mini to get this working….LOL. HP is a Heartless company. They do not care….I have an old Freeking Toshiba Tecra laptop runing Windos 95 that works better than this HP and it still works! I have an old Dell that runs Windows 98 and it still works…modem and all..Allbeit a bit slower but reliable. God! Sometimes I wish I were a Lawyer.. I spend my days messing with HP and getting this Class action lawsuit going.
BUT I do have a way to fight this company……and that is effecting future sales….pass it on to your friends. As for me HP, I work for a Multi Billion $$ Healthcare IT firm that actually sells your Servers and is a channel partner LOL, guess what? I am going to sway my customers from your brand of crap and sell more IBM and Dell…maybe you will listen to that! So while you won’t fix mine or others on this blog I will make sure this will so cost you in the big Unix HP Server space….OK, I now feel better and will buy a replacement PC…ya think it will be HP? Even if you make a pencil sharpener I ain’t buying it. Recall this line of Laptops and get your reputation back!!! Ok I feel better, now I will give this laptop over to my dog to chew on…. 2 year old laptop! SUX!!!
August 14th, 2009 at 7:26 am
My dv6000 will not work and the recall period ended recently. This is absolutely ridiculous. I will never buy HP again. BOYCOTT HP they are terrible and their customer service reps in INDIA are terrible

This is a scam. HP are scam artists, pure and simple. When I called their customer service 800 number their response was we extended the warranty for a year and so there is nothing they can do. After I complained they said I could ship back the computer and get the motherboard replaced for $277. The computer wasn’t worth much more than that (particularly this hunk of tin). Their resonse is that the information was on the website, as if people would randomly check that if there wasn’t a problem. It’s not like they were emailing or contacting us, even though they knew we had one of their garbage computers. The person I took the computer to have the problem analysed says he sees several of these a week. He knew what was wrong two seconds after looking at it. I would recommmend never ever buying anything from such a disreputable company again. I know I wont be.

My experience with HP was the same. Bought my dv6308 just over two years ago. I recieved the email from HP regarding possible problems with my model and downloaded the useless BIOS update. Weeks later the wireless went out. It was within the first year warranty period, so the motherboard was replaced at no cost to me. A couple months ago I lost sound. It was after installing an update, so I uninstalled the update and my sound came back. A few weeks ago I started having battery issues. Since the laptop was two years old, I wasn’t too suprised about having to buy a new battery. Then yesterday, I go to turn on the computer and the blue lights come on for about ten seconds, turn off, and turn back on again. Motherboard is fried again! HP wants $400 for the repairs. Went to Best Buy today and purchased a Toshiba Satellite E105. Spent twice as much as it would cost to “repair” my HP, but replacing the motherboard once a year…. i don’t think so. One of the Geek Squad employees said the motherboard issues are caused by the NVIDIA chip. Has anyone else heard this? I’m upset I purchased a lemon, but more aggravating is HP’s total lack of customer service. Hopefully my new laptop will outlive the last one… two friggin years! What a piece of junk.

Suggestion only…you may want to consider purchasing the HP Pavilion dv6000 model or model type. Long lasting, durable, reliable.
September 2nd, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Well, I said I would make them pay for their crappy Hardware and I did. I am in a unique position to sell Servers and apliance systems. So to make them feel a little pain too I pushed an IBM solution over HP and my customer got a product from a more REPUTABLE company. And I had a great laugh in the meantime. Guess what the HP “opportunity cost” was?(what it cost them to mess with all of you and me)… $148,752 US greenbacks and that does not include the 3 year uplift warranty they lost out on…..this is where they really make cash….LOL. This should have paid for them to fix our sustems…but I am not done…next time do the right thing and fix your customer issues. I feel so much better now. I am going to continue to fight them to get my computer covered. If they continue this sharade with me it will continue to cost them…that simple.
OK HP, listen to your angry customers and fix this crappy product you sold them. You sold all of us a computer that was design to die an fast. Shame on you…. This was my son’s computer and I am one ticked off dad and right at the start of the school year! I’ll be back to let you fine folks know the outcome.
in the meantime, don’t buy HP…I’ll keep you posted…
September 6th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
I have heard too many stories now about the HP problems!!!! I also am having the same problems with the motherboard. The warranty expires 6 days ago, and now NO WIRELESS INTERNET CONNECTION” completely wiped out!!!! I think we all should get together on this thing and call “better business bureau” and see if we can get some thing done about this…there are just too many problems going around with HP….

If you are a UK consumer and are having problems with your HP Laptop take it back to the store you bought it from and demand a refund under the Sale of Goods Act 1979. Don’t worry if it’s out of Warranty you have upto 6 years to raise the issue under this Act although you may have to prove the goods were not of ’satisfactory quality’ and the fault was inherent. Do an internet search to find numerous examples of HP laptop failures and check out HP’s own user forums to support your claim. The DV6000 series in particular seems prone to failure and HP offered an Extended Warranty service to some but not all consumers whose laptops showed symptoms such as losing wireless access, failure to boot up, blank screens etc. It would appear that eventually the motherboard needs to be replaced due to an alleged overheating graphics card, cheap solder and poor cooling. For non UK consumers check out any consumer protection laws that may apply in your country.
September 16th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
Wow HP really lost credibility with this product. I had no idea so many were in the same boat. I have an older dv6000. It’s (supposedly) had it’s mobo replaced 2x at HPs expense. Over time i lost 1st the sound, 2nd the monitor and now the wireless. It really is pathetic considering we are talking about a basic PC. All of those problems happened AFTER HP replaced the board!
WTF?
September 25th, 2009 at 11:22 am
I just had a really wonderful talk with HP. HP is telling me that while there is a lawsuit against them, it has not been concluded. They said that they voluntarily extended the warranty on their own for another year.
My customer brought their laptop back to Best Buy because they couldn’t get on the internet. Best Buys sent out their laptop in July to a repair center. The customer was told it was not their wireless adaptor but the motherboard and could be replaced for $277.00. This took 3 weeks. I heard about this and called the end-user who gave me their receipt. Why didn’t Best Buy send the laptop to HP when they had it. If they had, the motherboard would have been replaced under the extended warranty and the customer would have had a laptop that could access the internet.
Instead, Best Buys kept the laptop past the warranty cutoff, Aug 30, 2009 and returned it to the customer. The customer is out again.
Apparently the lawsuit has not been concluded and people need to go find the firm that is bringing this class action lawsuit and sign-on. I will post it if I can find out who is conducting the class-action. HP sucks a big one.

UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT
DISTRICT OF NEW JERSEY
TRACY LEBLANC, individually and on behalf
of all others similarly situated;
Plaintiff,
v.
HEWLET-PACKARD CO., a Delaware
corporation,
Defendant.
Civil Action No.
CLASS ACTION COMPLAINT
AND DEMAND
FOR JURY TRIAL
Plaintiff Tracy LeBlanc, individually and on behalf of all others similarly situated, by way
of Complaint against defendant Hewlett-Packard Co. (“HP” or “Defendant”), says:
OVERVIEW OF THE ACTION
1. This is a proposed class action brought by Plaintiff individually on behalf of a
proposed Class of consumers of HP notebook computers (“HP notebooks” or “notebooks”) with
defective chip sets, as defined more fully herein.
Case 5:09-cv-00328-RMW Document 1 Filed 12/19/2008 Page 1 of 17
-2-
2. Nvidia Corp. (“Nvidia”) chip sets used by HP in its notebooks fail at an unusually
high rate. Nvidia has stated that its graphic processing units (“GPUs”) and media and
communication processors (“MCPs”) contain a weak die/packaging material. As the GPUs and
MCPs fail the HP notebooks display black screens, duplicate images, wireless networking
complications, and the random appearance of lines, characters and other on screen interference,
and total failure.
3. HP knew of the problems with Nvidia GPU’s and MCP’s and remained silent
while consumers purchased HP notebooks and while HP notebooks where serviced for warranty
and out of warranty claims.
4. HP’s acts and omissions constitute: (1) statutory fraud; (2) breach of implied
warranty; (3) unjust enrichment; and (4) declaratory judgment.
JURISDICTION AND VENUE
5. This Court has pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1332(d). This is a class action involving
more than 100 class members. At least one member of the Class is a citizen of a State different
from defendant, and the amount in controversy, in the aggregate, exceeds the sum of
$5,000,000.00 exclusive of interest and costs.
6. Venue is proper under 28 U.S.C. § 1391. Defendant conducts substantial business
in this District, transacts business in New Jersey and committed illegal acts in, maintains agents
or representatives in, and is otherwise found in this District. Defendant regularly and
continuously conducts business in interstate commerce that is carried out in part in this District.
PARTIES
7. Tracy LeBlanc. Plaintiff Tracy LeBlanc is a citizen of New Jersey residing in
Wharton, New Jersey, who purchased an HP notebook that included Nvidia chips. Plaintiff
Case 5:09-cv-00328-RMW Document 1 Filed 12/19/2008 Page 2 of 17
-3-
made at least three warranty claims for problems stemming from the defective chips before the
end of warranty, and all three were denied.
8. Hewlett-Packard Co. Defendant Hewlett-Packard Co. is a Delaware corporation
with its principal place of business at 3000 Hanover Street, Palo Alto, California.
OVERVIEW
9. Nvidia is the world leader in visual computing technologies and the inventor of
the Graphics Processing Unit (“GPU”) a high Performance processor which generates
interactive graphics on personal computers. Nvidia also makes graphics processors, wireless
communications processors, PC motherboard chipsets, and media and communications
processors (“MCPs”).
10. On July 2, 2008, Nvidia announced that flawed processes and materials used in
manufacturing GPU’s and MCP’s was causing these mobile video adapters to fail at unusually
high rates. While Nvidia claims that it has not been able to determine a root cause for these
failures, Nvidia admits that testing suggests a weak material set of die/package combination,
system thermal management designs, and customer use patterns are contributing factors. Prior to
the total failure of the graphics cards, affected computers often suffer from a variety of
symptoms, including black screens, duplicate images, wireless networking complications, and
the random appearance of lines, characters, and other on-screen interference.
11. According to a Nvidia SEC filing:
Nvidia plans to take a one-time charge from $150 million to $200
million against cost of revenue for the second quarter to cover
anticipated warranty, repair, return, replacement and other costs
and expenses, arising from a weak die/packaging material set in
certain versions of its previous generation GPU and MCP products
used in notebook systems. Certain notebook configurations with
Case 5:09-cv-00328-RMW Document 1 Filed 12/19/2008 Page 3 of 17
-4-
GPUs and MCPs manufactured with a certain die/packaging
material set are failing in the field at higher than normal rates.
12. Nvidia’s Vice President for Investor Relations and Communications, conceded
during the September 4, 2008, “Citigroup Technology Conference” that Nvidia began
troubleshooting these problems with major computer manufacturers, including HP, beginning no
later than August of 2007.
13. Nvidia’s investment relations officer specifically acknowledged that the defects,
even if corrected, cause degradation in battery life. He suggested that, among others, purchasers
of HP notebooks with defective Nvidia chip sets should be satisfied with a second-rate computer.
14. The chip problem stems from what is been termed “heat cycling”. When HP
computers equipped with Nvidia’s graphics cards are switched on, the cards quickly reach high
temperatures. As the cards cool down, however, the rapid change in temperature subjects the
chips to extreme physical stress. As a result, solder joints weaken and ultimately crack, causing
the video adapters to malfunction or stop working altogether.
HP’S CONDUCT
15. Though faced with hundreds of consumer complaints regarding these problems,
HP failed to warn consumers about the common design and manufacturing defects contained in
its affected notebook computers. Instead, HP remained silent while consumers purchased its
defective products and made warranty claims, knowing that they would malfunction and result
in, among other things, Plaintiff’s and the Class’ inability to use their notebook computers for
their intended purposes and functions.
16. In response to these defects, HP released hardware BIOS updates that activate the
system cooling fan sooner and for a longer period of time, with the aim of keeping the adapter
Case 5:09-cv-00328-RMW Document 1 Filed 12/19/2008 Page 4 of 17
-5-
from growing too hot. This is only a temporary solution, however, and it is accompanied by a
host of negative side effects that HP purposefully failed to disclose, including dramatically
reduced battery life and simultaneous increase in the level of noise produced by the fan.
17. Additionally, technology commentators have suggested that HP’s quick fix may
lead to the premature failure of the cooling fan. It has also been predicted that these BIOS
updates will merely postpone failure of NVIDIA video cards, including those installed in
notebook computers manufactured by HP, until after their warranties expire.
18. According to multiple public sources, the earliest of the BIOS updates was issued
by Hewlett-Packard no later than November 2007. Not until July 2008, however, did HP admit
that certain of its notebook computers contained defective chip sets and publish a list of the
defective notebook computers. Included were notebooks in HP’s Pavilion and Compaq Presario
computer lines.
19. On its website, HP listed some of the symptoms resulting from the defective
chips:
a. “The notebook does not detect wireless networks and the wireless adapter is not
detected in the Device Manager.”
b. “There is no video on the computer LCD panel or external monitor.”
c. “The notebook has no power and no active LEDs.”
d. “The notebook does not start.”
e. “The battery charge indicator light does not turn on when the battery is installed
and the AC adapter is connected.”
f. “The notebook issues a single beep during boot indicating no power.”
g. “The external monitor functions but there is no image on the notebook LCD
panel.”
Case 5:09-cv-00328-RMW Document 1 Filed 12/19/2008 Page 5 of 17

20. HP has been flooded with complaints from purchasers of its notebook computers,
and overall consumer response to the defective Nvidia video cards has been overwhelmingly
negative.
CLASS ACTION ALLEGATIONS
A. Definition of the Class
21. Plaintiff brings all claims herein as class claims pursuant to Fed. R. Civ. P. 23.
The requirements of Fed. R. Civ. P. 23(a), (b)(2) and (b)(3) are met with respect to the class
defined below, of which Plaintiff is a member:
All persons who purchased a Hewlett-Packard Co. notebook or
notebook computer/s equipped with chip sets or video graphics
cards manufactured by NVIDIA Corp.
22. The class is objectively identified through examination of Defendant’s business
records, though the proposed class and/or classes may be modified pending discovery. Excluded
from the Class are: Defendant, any entities in which it has a controlling interest, any parents,
subsidiaries, affiliates, officers, directors, employees and members of such persons immediate
families, and the presiding judge(s) in this case and his, her or their immediate family.
B. Numerosity
23. At this time, Plaintiff does not know the exact size of the Class. Nonetheless, due
to the thousands of retail purchasers, Plaintiff reasonably believes that the Class members are so
numerous that joinder of all members is impracticable. The number and identities of Class
members is administratively feasible and can be determined through appropriate discovery.
C. Commonality
24. There are questions of law or fact common to the class, including at least the
following:
Case 5:09-cv-00328-RMW Document 1 Filed 12/19/2008 Page 6 of 17
-7-
(a) Whether HP notebook computers were equipped with defective
Nvidia chip sets;
(b) Whether HP concealed the existence of such defects;
(c) Whether HP was unjustly enriched by the conduct alleged herein;
(d) Whether Defendant had actual knowledge of its practice but failed
to disclose it to Plaintiff or the Class;
(e) Whether Defendant has acted or refused to act on grounds
generally applicable to the Class;
(f) Whether Defendant’s conduct constitutes consumer fraud; and
(g) Whether Plaintiff and other members of the Class have been
damaged, and if so, what is the proper measure of such damages?
D. Typicality
25. Plaintiff has the same interests in this matter as all other members of the Class,
and his claims are typical of all members of the class.
E. Adequacy
26. Plaintiff is committed to pursuing this action and has retained competent counsel
experienced in the prosecution and successful resolution of consumer class actions. Plaintiff will
fairly and adequately represent the interests of the Class members and does not have interests
adverse to the Class.
F. The Prerequisites of Rule 23(b)(2) are Satisfied
27. The prerequisites to maintaining a class action for injunctive and equitable relief
pursuant to Fed. R. Civ. P. 23(b)(2) exist as Defendant has acted or refused to act on grounds
generally applicable to the Class thereby making appropriate final injunctive and equitable relief
with respect to the Class as a whole.
Case 5:09-cv-00328-RMW Document 1 Filed 12/19/2008 Page 7 of 17
-8-
28. The prosecution of separate actions by members of the class would create a risk of
establishing incompatible standards of conduct for Defendant. For example, one court might
decide that the challenged actions are illegal and enjoin them, while another court might decide
that those same actions are not illegal. Individual actions may, as a practical matter, be
dispositive of the interest of Class members, who would not be parties to those actions.
29. Defendant’s actions are generally applicable to the Class as a whole, and Plaintiff
seek, inter alia, equitable remedies with respect to the class as a whole.
30. Defendant’s systemic policy and practices make declaratory relief with respect to
the class as a whole appropriate.
G. The Prerequisites of Rule 23(b)(3) are Satisfied
31. This case satisfies the prerequisites of Fed. R. Civ. P. 23(b)(3). The common
questions of law and fact enumerated above predominate over questions affecting only individual
members of the Class, and a class action is the superior method for fair and efficient adjudication
of the controversy. The likelihood that individual members of the Class will prosecute separate
actions is remote due to the extensive time and considerable expense necessary to conduct such
litigation, especially when compared to the relatively modest amount of monetary, injunctive and
equitable relief at issue for each individual Class member. This action will be prosecuted in a
fashion to ensure the Court’s able management of this case as a class action on behalf of the class
defined above.
COUNT I
(Violation of Substantially Similar Consumer Protection Acts)
32. Plaintiff repeats and realleges the allegations of the prior paragraphs as if fully
stated herein.
Case 5:09-cv-00328-RMW Document 1 Filed 12/19/2008 Page 8 of 17
-9-
33. Class is defined, pending discovery, to include individuals and entities from New
Jersey, where Plaintiff resides, and from additional states that have enacted substantially similar
consumer protection laws,1 which were enacted and designed to protect consumers against
unfair, deceptive and/or fraudulent business practices. See, e.g., N.J.S.A. § 56:8-1 et seq.
34. Plaintiff and other Class members, as purchasers of HP notebooks, are consumers
within the meaning of the Consumer Protection Acts given that Defendant’s business activities
involve trade or commerce, are addressed to the market generally and otherwise implicate
consumer protection concerns.
35. Defendant’s conduct impacts the public interest.
36. The notebooks sold by Defendant are merchandise within the meaning of the
Consumer Protection Acts, and Plaintiff (and Class members) are consumers within the meaning
of the Acts and thus entitled to the statutory remedies made available in them.
37. Consumers (such as Plaintiff) were entitled to disclosure of all material facts
because HP notebooks contained defective chips, which would be a material fact in a consumer’s
decision-making process. Further, without HP’s disclosure, consumers would not know that the
chips were defective.
38. Once the risk of manufacturing notebooks with defective chips became
significant, consumers (such as Plaintiff) were entitled to disclosure of that fact because a
1 Consumer fraud claims of non-New Jersey Class members are brought under the
consumer protection statute(s) of their respective states, though the court may find application of
California law to the entire class appropriate. See e.g., Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code § 17200 et seq., §
17500 et seq. (California); Fla. Stat. Ann. § 501.201 et seq. (Florida); 815 ILCS § 505/1 et seq.
(Illinois); Mich. Stat. Ann. § 19.418(1) et seq. (Michigan); Mo. Rev. Stat. § 407.010 et seq.
(Missouri); N.Y. Gen. Bus. Law. § 349 et seq. (New York); N.C. Gen. Stat. § 75-1 et seq. (North
Carolina); Ohio Rev. Code Ann. § 1345.01 et seq. (Ohio); Wash. Rev. Code § 19.86.010 et seq.
(Washington).

-10-
significant risk of defective chips would be a material fact in a consumer’s decision-making
process, and/or without HP’s disclosure, consumers would not know that there is any risk of
defective chips.
39. Moreover, because chips included in a notebook are not detailed on the
packaging, consumers had no way to know that defective chips would be included in the
purchase. All of these facts were material to consumers’ (such as Plaintiff’s) purchase decisions.
40. Specifically, at all times relevant, HP continuously and consistently failed to
disclose to consumers (such as Plaintiff) that it was manufacturing its notebooks with defective
chips, and that it was not honoring warranty claims for those defective chips.
41. HP intended that Plaintiff and the Class would rely on the deception by
purchasing its notebooks, unaware of the material facts described above. This conduct
constitutes consumer fraud within the meaning of the various consumer protection statutes.
42. HP has violated the Acts in the sale of notebooks by selling said notebooks with
defective chips, and failing to disclose and/or concealing the defective chips from Plaintiff and
Class.
43. HP intended that Plaintiff and the Class would rely on the deception by
purchasing HP notebooks, unaware of the material facts described above. This conduct is
actionable within the meaning of the Consumer Protection Acts.
44. Defendant’s conduct constitutes unlawful, unfair and/or deceptive business
practices within the meaning of the Acts.
45. The above-described unlawful, unfair and deceptive business practices by
Defendant continue to present a threat to members of the consuming public. Defendant’s
Case 5:09-cv-00328-RMW Document 1 Filed 12/19/2008 Page 10 of 17
-11-
conduct as alleged herein violates the substantially similar unfair and deceptive acts and practices
laws of other states.
46. Defendant’s conduct has proximately caused damage to Plaintiff and Class
members in an amount to be proven at trial.
WHEREFORE, Plaintiff, individually and on behalf of the Class of persons described
herein, demands judgment as follows:
A. Finding that this action satisfies the prerequisites for maintenance as a
class action set forth in Fed. R. Civ. P. 23(a) and (b)(3), and certifying the
Class defined herein;
B. Designating Plaintiff as representative of the Class and his counsel as
Class counsel;
C. Entering judgment in favor of Plaintiff and the Class and against
Defendant;
D. Awarding Plaintiff and Class members their individual damages and
attorneys’ fees and allowing costs, including interest thereon;
E. Granting such further relief as the Court deems just.
COUNT II
(Unjust Enrichment)
47. Plaintiff repeats and realleges the allegations of the prior paragraphs, as if fully
stated herein.
48. HP notebooks sold at retail contain defective chips.
49. Plaintiff and the Class have conferred benefits on Defendant by purchasing HP
notebooks.
Case 5:09-cv-00328-RMW Document 1 Filed 12/19/2008 Page 11 of 17
-12-
50. Defendant has knowingly and willingly accepted these benefits from Plaintiff and
the Class.
51. Under the circumstances, it is inequitable for Defendant to retain these benefits at
the expense of Plaintiff and the Class.
52. Defendant has been unjustly enriched at the expense of and detriment of Plaintiff
and the Class by wrongfully collecting money to which Defendant, in equity, is not entitled.
53. Plaintiff and the Class are entitled to recover from Defendants all amounts
wrongfully collected and improperly retained by Defendant, plus interest thereon.
54. As a direct and proximate result of Defendant’s unjust enrichment, Plaintiff and
the Class have suffered injury and are entitled to reimbursement, restitution and disgorgement
from Defendant of the benefits conferred by Plaintiff and the Class.
55. Plaintiff and the Class have no adequate remedy at law.
56. Plaintiff seeks to obtain a pecuniary benefit for the Class in the form of all
reimbursement, restitution and disgorgement from Defendants. Plaintiff’s counsel are entitled to
recover their reasonable attorneys’ fees and expenses as a result of the conference of a pecuniary
benefit on behalf of the Class, and will seek an award of such fees and expenses at the
appropriate time.
WHEREFORE, Plaintiff, individually and on behalf of the Class of persons described
herein, demands judgment as follows:
A. Finding that this action satisfies the prerequisites for maintenance as a
class action set forth in Fed. R. Civ. P. 23(a) and (b)(3), and certifying the
Class defined herein;
Case 5:09-cv-00328-RMW Document 1 Filed 12/19/2008 Page 12 of 17
-13-
B. Designating Plaintiff as representative of the Class and his counsel as
Class counsel;
C. Entering judgment in favor or Plaintiff and the Class and against
Defendant;
D. Awarding Plaintiff and Class members their individual damages and
attorneys’ fees and allowing costs, including interest thereon;
E. Imposing a constructive trust on amounts wrongfully collected from
Plaintiff and the Class members pending resolution of their claims herein;
F. Granting such further relief as the Court deems just.
COUNT III
(Breach of Implied Warranty of Merchantability)
57. Plaintiff repeats and realleges the allegations of the prior paragraphs as if fully
stated herein.
58. The HP notebooks were defectively made, having left Defendants’ manufacturing
facilities with defective chips.
59. At all times relevant hereto, there was duty imposed by law which requires that a
manufacturer or seller’s product be reasonably fit for the purposes for which such products are
used, and that product be acceptable in trade for the product description.
60. Notwithstanding the aforementioned duty, at the time of delivery, HP notebooks
sold to Plaintiff and the Class were not merchantable.
61. As documented in its own business records and elsewhere, Defendant was notified
that its notebooks were not merchantable.
Case 5:09-cv-00328-RMW Document 1 Filed 12/19/2008 Page 13 of 17
-14-
62. As a result of the non-merchantability of the HP notebooks described herein,
Plaintiff and other members of the Class sustained a loss or damages.
WHEREFORE, Plaintiff, individually and on behalf of the Class of persons described
herein, demands judgment as follows:
A. Finding that this action satisfies the prerequisites for maintenance as a
class action set forth in Fed. R. Civ. P. 23(a) and (b)(2), and certifying the
Declaratory Relief Class defined herein;
B. Designating Plaintiff as representative of the Class and his counsel as
Class counsel;
C. Entering judgment in favor of Plaintiff and the Class and against
Defendant;
D. Awarding Plaintiff and Class members their individual damages and
attorneys’ fees and allowing costs, including interest thereon; and
E. Granting such further relief as the Court deems just.
COUNT IV
(Declaratory Relief Pursuant To 28 U.S.C. § 2201)
63. Plaintiff repeats and realleges the allegations of the prior paragraphs, as if fully
stated herein.
64. There is an actual controversy between HP and the Class concerning whether
problems with HP notebooks resulting from the defective chips are excluded from HP warranty
coverage.
Case 5:09-cv-00328-RMW Document 1 Filed 12/19/2008 Page 14 of 17
-15-
65. Pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 2201 this Court may “declare the rights and legal
relations of any interested party seeking such declaration, whether or not further relief is or could
be sought.”
66. HP has wrongfully excluded from warranty coverage problems resulting from the
defective chips.
67. Accordingly, Plaintiff seeks a declaration that the problems with HP notebooks
resulting from the defective chips are covered by HP warranties.
WHEREFORE, Plaintiff, individually and on behalf of the Class of persons described
herein, demands judgment for an Order as follows:
A. Finding that this action satisfies the prerequisites for maintenance as a
class action set forth in Fed. R. Civ. P. 23(a) and (b)(2), and certifying the
Declaratory Relief Class defined herein;
B. Designating Plaintiff as representative of the Class and his counsel as
Class counsel;
C. Entering judgment in favor of Plaintiff and the Class and against
Defendant;
D. Awarding Plaintiff and Class members their individual damages and
attorneys’ fees and allowing costs, including interest thereon; and
E. Granting such further relief as the Court deems just.

HP Pavilion Notebooks
SFMS has filed a complaint alleging that certain HP laptops contain serious defects which cause their power jacks to fail.
Summary of Pending Case: On January 6, 2009, Shepherd, Finkelman, Miller & Shah, LLP (“SFMS”), along with co-counsel filed a Class Action Complaint on behalf of Mr. Cass Wilson (“Plaintiff”) against Hewlett-Packard Company (“HP”) in the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara, Civil Action No. 1 09-CV-132004. The Complaint alleges that HP misrepresented and concealed material facts regarding certain laptops including a design defect, which causes the power jacks of the laptops to fail. Specifically, the defect affects the attachment of the power jacks to the motherboards of the laptops. As a result of the defect, the solder connection between the motherboard and the power jack is interrupted, which ultimately causes the laptops to fail. In addition, SFMS has learned from certain consumers that the defect may cause the laptops to catch fire. The HP Pavilion laptops at issue in Plaintiff’s case include laptops in the following series: dv, zd, ze, zt, zv and zx. Please click here for a list of laptop models that are excluded from Plaintiff’s case, as they were covered by a separate case and subsequent settlement. The case SFMS is handling does not relate to any problems regarding the NVIDIA graphics processing unit or the media communications chip. Those problems are the subject of a different lawsuit. To view the complaint filed in The NVIDIA GPU Litigation and obtain contact information for counsel in that case, please click here.
Plaintiff seeks to represent a class of all persons or entities in the United States who purchased, not for resale HP Pavilion Notebook model computers from the dv, zd, ze, zt, zv and zx series (with the exception of the excluded models mentioned above), directly from HP or from authorized resellers. Through his Complaint, Plaintiff alleges violations of the California Consumer Legal Remedies Act, the California Unfair Competition Law, and for breach of express warranty.
Status of Pending Case: In March 2009, HP filed a demurrer to the Class Action Complaint. Plaintiff opposed Defendant’s Motion on April 6, 2009. After a hearing on Defendant’s Motion, the Court overruled the demurrer with respect to Plaintiff’s Unfair Competition Law claim. Further, the Court overruled HP’s demurrer to the first and second causes of action for failure to specifically plead a cause of action grounded in fraud and overruled HP’s demurrer with respect to the first and second cause of action for lack of standing.
The Court sustained HP’s demurrer with respect to Plaintiff’s claims under the CLRA and for breach of warranty, but granted leave to amend.
On May 11, 2009, Plaintiff filed an Amended Class Action Complaint and on May 21, 2009, HP filed a notice to remove this case to Federal Court. A hearing was held before the Court concerning Plaintiff’s motion to remand the case on August 28, 2009. HP has also filed a motion to dismiss. The hearing on Defendant’s motion to dismiss also occurred on August 28, 2009. The Court has not yet issued a ruling on these motions.

Organizing HP Motherboard class action lawsuit
I have decided to gather and indication of interest for a class action lawsuit against Hewlett Packard. Please email me your name, address and contact phone number if you would like to join my effort in seeking vindication for the faulty products described by HP in the following post:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01087277&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1842189&lang=en
I’m not interested in making money from this, rather I just want to see the company stand behind their mistakes and provide me with what I paid $1000 for, a laptop computer that works. Any reasonable person assumes that a new PC has, under normal use, a life expectancy of 3-5 years; not 1-2 years. I am not paying $300 to have a computer fixed that I did not break. Its well documented that they made mistakes in their engineering process. This is the reason that they extended the warranty by an additional year, but what good is that if you weren’t notified and given an opportunity to participate. The company has all customers phone and email address. Think about the number of emails you get from their sales department each month.
In closing, this is nothing more than a big corporation making a decision based on dollars and not sense. Situations like this are exactly what the legal system exists for.

Allison,
Call HP at 800-474-6836 and tell them YOU EXPECT it will be fixed for free. Let them know you are a loyal HP customer and you are very disappointed in this unit. Tell them you KNOW 1 out of 7 units are bad and ask them what they can do for you. Tell the CS rep you will speak to a manager if necessary. That should get you a prepaid box & free motherboard replacement. Let us know how it goes….

I have this same model DV6000 laptop and not only does the wireless network adapter fail to be recognized but it will not boot up to the HP screen at times causing me to reboot several times. The problem is the MoBo and HP knew this which is why they have placed an extended limited warranty on it.Of course I’m 3 months out of warranty so they want to charge $260 for a repair of something they knew was going to fail. I will notify all 953 clients of mine in addition to my friends and family never to purchase from such a dishonest, unscrupulous company that has forgotten the meaning of customer service. A Public relations blunder is all they have achieved in trying to resolve any of my issues.
October 16th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Sadly I bought this computer 2nd hand. Mistake. I’m now having these problems.
I need a reciept for proof of purchase. To claim my free fix/warranty. Did I happen to mention 2nd hand.
Yay for me. “Fail”
Lets see if talking to a case manager helps me at all. Wish me luck.
October 18th, 2009 at 9:53 am
The info. on this site is amazing!! I have the dv6000. Just last week, I got the dreaded black screen, just one month after my warrenty had expired. I called HP and they told me I had to send my computer to them and that the minimum charge for them to look at it would be $400!!!! And they knew this was a manufacturer defect! (I just now found out.) I will never do business with HP again. They are unethical and dishonest.
October 20th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
BARB – Call back HP (800-474-6836) and tell them their request for payment is unacceptable and you EXPECT it to be repaired under some type of extended warranty repair (the term they used for my 2 yr. old unit was “Failure: SERVICE ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM”). The order was “Order type: BOX PLUS PICKUP & REPAIR, 2 DAY SHIPPING.”
I should have my free repaired unit back on 10/21/09.
Warranty status: in warranty
Service charge: $0.00
Payment method:not applicable
Good luck and keep us posted.

HP laptops suck so bad they should be called HP CRAPTOP’s because that’s what they are. They also feature offshore shitty support. Get an off brand that’s what I’m going to do tomorrow. It will last just as long and maybe longer and you won’t feel like you’re getting so screwed over. Hell they get the parts from the same damn place and it ain’t like you’re losing anything because you can’t understand their bullshit offshore support anyway. You probably won’t have problems with the wirless or motherboards – both of which have been a pain in the ass for me! Why should I buy a shitty product for it’s name. come to think of it… maybe I’ll look for a replacement for all that fuckin HP hardware out in my datacenter.

Wireless stopped working about 7-8 mos ago, not being as computer savvy as some I simply hooked up by ethernet until I could figure out the problem. I spent hours on the phone with my internet provider & with HP over the last several months in my spare time and now I find this site. I am so disappointed in HP and I really expect them to back up their product better than this. At this point I own 3 HP desktops & my dv6253 laptop and hoping for the best when (if) they return a call to me.

First I want to say this site is great and was a big help. I called HP and was telling them about the problem of the wirless card not being found, they told me my computer was past its warranty and they could do nothing for me. They told me I could pay to get it fixed and that is all they would do for me. So no I am stuck with a computer that won’t work. I will never buy an HP product again. To anyone else that has this problem good luck.

Update on defective HP motherboard.
For any of you that have been following my negotiation with HP, I am pleased to report the laptop was received and is currently functioning without problems – wireless works as expected. Remember, this unit was over 2 years old… Total repair cost including r/t shipping expenses: $0.00.
As Winston Churchhill once said, “Never give in, never give in, never; never; never; never – in nothing, great or small, large or petty – never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense.”

after hours of trial and error i came up 2 a possible solution….(85%will work, and 15% wont)..
i think u people are having problems like your hpdv6000 dosen’t detects your inbuilt wifi hardware and acts as if there wasn’t a wireless card installed in a motherboard, if thats the case then try this:
first you will need to heat up ur system chipset, this can be achieved by running a graphic intensive game like call of duty 4 or any similar hardware demanding game that will utilise ur hardware and eventually raise the motherboard’s temp. after playing the game for 45mins…quickly exit the game and get back to your desktop. As soon as u get to ur desktop, close the lid of ur laptop and let it go into standby mode. after 20-25 seconds quickly open ur lip again and watch ur wifi detected.
please give ur feedback
thx

well, after reading all the posts….ditto………i actually own 2 hp’s with the same problems.. first one after three calls the person half way around the world told me about the recall/extended warranty. I agree with another comment, if they have my registered information, why not email me and tell me they are having problems, but i think we all know why, because they didnt want to let me know till the warranty went out. the first one was repaired by hp in the pre shipped box and seems to be working fine. but the second one lasted about 40 days too long and i got the same response from them. their best offer was 259.00 to send it to them for repair. So, I called and asked for a case manager like one of the other posts reccommends, was given the run around for ten min and finally told to hold on……………….for 34 minutes…………only to have the lady come back in her broken english and say the case manager was unable to speak with me right now, but would call me in two to three days………..oh yea……im holding my breath. I left a message with the attorney in chicago, maybe he will call back. If the attorney gets in going, im all in. If you are reading this, doing your homework before buying a laptop…how many people have to post before you wise up and purchase something other than an HP!!!
November 4th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
I had my dv6000 for less than a year when the cd-rom drive refused to open anymore. I called HP and they said it is under warranty, send it in. The motherboard was replaced, and it fixed the cd-rom drive issue, but did nothing to help with the shotty wireless connection. So I read on here to replace the motherboard to slove the problem, if that doesnt work, what then?

Hi everybody,
I am proud to present great news to anybody with the HP/NVIDIA Defect!
I am in contact with a news station and just talked with an executive producer, they want to do a follow up story on that 19 year old student small claims case against HP( i contacted them a week ago).
Whoever is from the Bay Area, San Fran, Oakland etc. and is willing to travel to their studio, please get in contact with me either here or send me an email-frankliquidcherry.com
Cheers

Gosh – what great info – need to contact that lawyer. I called HP yesterday and was on the phone almost 2 hours talking to everyone and anyone that would listen. They were FIRM in saying they would not cover it – I expressed everything that most wrote here – identifying that I was never notified, they were aware of their shotty product – they knew and won’t stand behind their product. I am a working mother in jeopardy of losing my corporate job with a special needs child at home. I don’t have $259 to repair this thing or the money to buy a new one. I can’t believe after just 2 years my $1000 computer no longer works and from what I’m reading will eventually just die. Amazing craftmanship.
However upon reading about the CEO brought in just a few years ago – his motto was to cut staff which you know mean cut quality. I have 3 HP printers at home along with 2 computers and if HP comes back and says they will no longer cover this and fix the problem they knew about I will never buy them again and I will join any lawsuit necessary to prove a point!
November 13th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
Frank, when would people need to go into that news station and has anyone heard back from that attorney about the class action suit? I left a message and have had no response. Thanks.
November 15th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
Hey how can i help with this joke of a hp company my computer stopped working too 2 months after warrenty. let me know i like to se them fix all of then\m. they knew there was a problem with these thats why they added the extend limited warrenty. because they would half to do a recall and they still should.
November 16th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
I have had problems connecting to any wireless internet signal since I purchased my HP dv6-1053d a little over a year ago. I now simply connect my internet cable to my lapop and have given up on even trying to use the wireless connection. I simply think of my HP laptop as a desktop model and this sort of takes away the frustration I felt when I discovered that it was worthless as a portable laptop with internet capabilities. I doubt I could get my laptop serviced now because I think it is over a year old, but I would never buy another HP product again after this fiasco. I would also advice any friends and family from buying a HP product too. It’s really hard to believe that a company as established as HP would allow their customers to buy these lemons and then tell them they are on their own if a year has passed. How’s that for a model of customer service? So for the time being I will just continue using this as a desktop. No more HP ever again.

i had this happen but all i needed was the bios update and it worked fine. the thing that does bug me is the gpu problem hps of this year seem to have this one has died on me 2 times once while under warrenty the other i repaired myself and now it runs cool as can be. wonderful laptop realy for those who like a challenge
November 23rd, 2009 at 11:50 am
I had my laptop for about 2 years and I started having this same problem. Luckily, I bought a service plan through Best Buy. I sent it in and they replaced the motherboard. It worked for little bit and then it stopped again. I sent it in again and they replaced the motherboard again. Now, it works, but it stops periodically. The next laptop I buy will most likely not be an HP.
November 24th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
I don’t know if anyone’s mentioned it before but I hope that if you’re having problems and HP isn’t being cooperative (they certainly haven’t cooperated with me), let them know how you feel!

Hello,
My dv9000 series computer just started symptoms, two months out of the two year extended warranty. I have contacted HP to ask about the warranty and they say I am out of luck, and it will cost $259 to fix the problem.
My computer’s wireless device is no longer recognized in the device manager. I installed a usb wireless device, and the computer is working great, about as well as it ever has on the internet. My question is this. Is the wireless failure just the beginning of the end? Many of you have had complete failure, where the computer won’t come on at all. Can I expect this down the road? Have any of you had the wireless go out and the computer work ok after that without getting it fixed?
Thanks,
Ken

I will never buy from hp again.

Guys, is the Limited Warranty for HP and Compaq laptops covered for North America only. I happen to have a defective laptop covered under the recall but currently, I am not residing in North America. I am experiencing the same thing. Help please!

My laptop was still within warranty so I decided to start looking around to see if anyone else was having this problem.
January 6th, 2010 at 9:43 am
I have an HP Pavilion DV6308N and experienced a similar problem with the Wireless Card failing. LED light on the front left hand side of the unit does not turn blue. Device Driver shows the Device firmware still responds. Verified that the wired connection works. Also verified system settings for SSID, etc. for the wireless communications. HP offered to fix the Wireless card for $398. Obviously, there is a cheaper route of putting in a PCMCIA wireless card. I’m suspecting that the engineering issue of not being able to remove the heat is related to the wireless card going out.
I brought up the point of all the issues that have been reported by various people, and the response was that they have no alerts or motherboard issues associated with this Laptop model.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:10 pm
I have a dv6000 (dv6119us), purchased 12/7/06, and always thought that my wireless connection would turn off, and then on because my internet connection was glitchy. Well, as of last night, I only get an amber light (not blue), and found this website after doing some research.
I called HP, and insisted (per Chart_boy), that HP should fix this for free because HP has known about this problem all along, and should have recalled the computers to begin with. The best offer give was $259 to repair instead of the usual $398. I said I was a loyal HP customer with 3 HP computers and 2 HP printers, and he said he would escalate the issue. After waiting on hold for 5 minutes, I finall got a case number, and I’m supposed to get a call back tomorrow. I will let you all know how it goes.
In case I cannot get a free fix, is it worth worth getting a wireless adaptor, or a wireless netword card, or can I expect the motherboard to go shortly?
Also, what will come out of the class action lawsuit, and who is eligible to join (purchased 37 months ago)?
January 11th, 2010 at 5:46 pm
Just hung up with HP. I have the wireless issue with the motherboard. HP will not help since the extension they provided was up to 10/09. I have had no communication from them about this problem. Now, I suggest that anyone having this problem post on facebook, Linkden, the Better Business Bureau and join the class action suit. This is a known issue, acknowledged by HP and they choose to scam the consumer. I rather take the $259 to replace the motherboard as they suggest and put it towards a new notebook.
January 12th, 2010 at 4:12 pm
Like so many of you, have a DV 6000 series with problems.
Purchased new in Dec 2008 for a Christmas present for my daughter to take to college.
Motherboard fried 01/12/2009 3 hrs of troubleshooting with tech over the phone. Box sent for repair.
Memory card bad when received back. 02/11/2009 shipped back to HP again.
Daughter went to start computer this am 01/12/2010, exactly 1 yr to the day when the last trouble ticket was generated (so less than 1 yr after repaired) and had the same “no LED, no boot” bad motherboard problem.
HP “Your warantee expired 12/25/2009. Send it in with $259 if you want it repaired.”
Tried the verbiage suggested above. She had a canned answer prepared. “The extended warantee for the bad motherboards expired in Aug 2009. We no longer cover it.”
So, contacted the yahoo address above. Haven’t decided if small claims court is the way to go or the class action lawsuit, which probably will return pennies on the dollar if any.

Call Freed & Weiss Law Firm in Chicago. They will add your name to a list for a class action suit. Keep a copy of any communication and receipts you have had with HP for future discovery. Yes a class action law suit takes years, but you should not let HP get away with ripping off its loyal customers!

OK, I got HP to take my dv6000 in for a free repair. I’ve had the laptop for 3 years and a month when the wireless went out. See my first post (four posts back).
My call was escalated and I got to talk to someone in the US the following day. He was polite, but reminded me that the warrantee was already extended a year. I pointed out that “I am a loyal HP customer with 3 HP computers and 2 HP printers. My wife’s laptop is older, and it works fine. This is no ordinary problem, but one that HP knew about from the beginning, and I think HP should fix it.” He looked at my data and said, “yes, I see that you have had 3 HP printers, and an HP Media Extender too.” That was the ticket. He took my info, with a description of all that was wrong (no wireless connection, Bios needs upgrading, and my battery also will not hold a charge for more than a couple of minutes). He sent a shipping paid box, and I sent it off today.
Also, I spoke with someone at Freed & Weiss Law Firm in Chicago. He said that if I got HP to fix the computer, that is the best course. But “just don’t sign anything” that would waive my rights to pursue further action.
Good luck. Be persistent, be polite, point out if you have other HP products, and tell them “$259 IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH” for a problem they new about from the beginning.

I have a DV6408NR or a DV6000 series and about 6 days ago. My wireless went out completely. No blue light but amber, contacted hp via email and tech support reply within 24 hours which is good. However, my Wireless drivers are missing in the device manager. I have used system recovery 4 times and I have now reinstalled the OS. Nothing happens, the amber light is still there. Wrote to hp tech support to let them know of my extensive research about the matter, that hp has known about the faulty motherboard since 07 and that 1 in 7 DV6000 series with AMD are faulty. And if hp will replace or fix the motherboard for free.
Here is a list of all of the problems I have had or fixed since I bought this notebook a little over 2 years:
1) Replaced corrupted seagate HD. hp wanted $500 to replace it, the thing is that I bought the notebook for $500 that came with a free canon MP120 printer that turned out to be just junk too. Went to newegg.com and found the same Hardrive for $89. You bee the judge of spending $500 or $89 for the same HD.
2) AC charger cord got very hot and finally the wire just snapped. I was in Singapore when it happen. I was very upset. Came back to the US, went to Frys and got an hp AC charger for $69 and it’s still working at least that has not turned into junk.
3) Touch pad doesn’t work sometimes and the solution is to restart the computer.
4) Wireless doesn’t work and I believe I am finally going to get a USB wireless adapter to bypass the issue.
I will never buy HP or Compaq products, this notebook has caused the growth of gay hairs. Seriously, I would really want to sue hp for the scam they are running, for faulty products, for withholding vital information to it’s customers that DV6000 and other notebooks are faulty, and for failing to recall and fix such problems at no cost to the customer eve after the warranty has expired.

A few message above: After reading the 2 posts from Rob Bailey Says: January 9th, 2010 at 1:10 pm and January 15th, 2010 at 11:28 pm. I am so furious!!!!! This is totally discriminated!!!! This is totally unfair to all of us who are victims of HP faulty notebooks. This guys notebook was out-of-warranty by 13 months far more than some us and is getting free repair. I too own more than one HP product and it has not done me any good to mention that to HP, they still say I cannot get a free repair because I waited 6 days after the warranty expired, only 6 days, that is nothing to 13 months of out- of- warranty. How can HP do this us? I suggest everyone of us should contact HP and hollow discriminated to the highest! Why do for this guy and not us is totally discrimination!!!!!! Let them know you are furious with this and take whatever action you can to not let them get away with discrimination! I am!!!!!

Bought my dv6000 about 7 months ago. Entire quick touch pad – volume controls & wireless just stopped working a few days ago. Called hp support but was asked to search for solution on hp web instead. Tried recovery and all but nothing works….until i read this blog. Thanks for sharing yr experience, will certainly look up hp tech support when i go over next week to get my ac adaptor replaced (under warranty). It’s really unfair for hp to sell sub-standard devices to consumers…speaks volumes about their quality control & integrity!!

I also have (had) an hp computer of the dv6000 series. At first, the computer exhibited no symptoms; I suspect because I didn’t use the wireless, and actively kept it off, even uninstalling its software. There have been hacking issues. These hacking issues seem to have precipitated the failures that all the rest have described. First, there was the failure of the CD Rom, which customer support claimed was a hardware malfuntion, of the CD Rom. They had me purchase a new one. I upgraded. Ultimately I discovered the CD Rom was never broken, so now I had two. Also, I discovered that files and registry changes had affected the CD Rom to not be detected. Then, months later I purchased an online game for 6.99, complete with key, and I notice when I was playing it, that it played very hot. We started using personal fans under the computers to alleviate the heat problem. It worked very well, but a little noisy. After the computer suddenly died, I went back to download the 6.99 game on another computer, the old one I still had. When I looked at the EULA, I noticed specific wording that most people are aware of, and probably don’t give a second thought to anymore. I will paraphrase, because similar wording can be seen on most copyrighted material, that it isn’t the program company’s fault if there is loss of function, destruction of property, injury or confidence or peace of mind if one uses the programming, as in this case, a 6.99 game; basically, it’s a denial of any consequences if the program uses your wireless or your own computer, to access the internet and burns up as a result, this is all according to ‘DRM’, to report on your program usage. What if DRM also, as well as the hardware, is responsible for malicious manipulation and vandalism of our personal computers? I have constantly had storage made unusable, CD Roms made unusable, printers, email, internet browser, even program usage and administrator rights made unusable. This is on both computers. This isn’t a matter of EULAs, or using copyright material. It is purposeful vandalism. These computers sound similar to IED’s or Improvised Explosive Devises. I would like to suggest this isn’t appropriate business practice whatever the EULA may state, or whatever the excuse. I don’t steal programming, I don’t steal music, I’ve only tried to back up my own records and route out spyware. There is no excuse for this. I’ve even had movies and music CD’s which I’ve purchased retail blocked for DRM. They all appear to bel legitimate. If some people are getting away with pirating mass amounts of these things, why are penny pinchers being terrorised? It isn’t just HP.

I bought this laptop dv9700 less than two years ago and it got stuck in the start up and would not turn on.
I went to five technicians and all of them said that it was because of the motherboard and that it was very common with this model.
I called HP, telling them this, and the representative even tried to convince me that maybe it was because of the video card.
I asked them why they wouldn’t do anything to fix a common problem that many of their customers complain about.
The representative told me that it wasn’t a common problem, that HP had fixed the problem in the earlier models with limited warranty service enhancement, and that my laptop was not faulty.
It is ridiculous that I paid as much as I did for this laptop for it to not even work for two years.
It is frustrating to know that many people have the same issue regarding this particular model and that HP will not acknowledge that it exists and fix it.
Wish someone can help to seek for legal action.

I also had a dv6000. Wireless stopped working first and then the LCD was black. I cannot imagine HP sold products with manufactured problems. Toyota had to pay penalty for the similar issue and why hp doesn’t.

I’ve recently bought a dv6-2120 about 2 weeks ago and wifi is not functioning as it should. The problem is it wont connect or will disconnect if you bring the laptop out of about 4m radius from the router. I have 3 other laptops, 3 mobile phones and all of them worked perfectly well at the same area.
Called HP support the first time and instructed to install the bios / driver update for wireless broadcom. This does not solve the problem
initiated a instant chat support and the tech requested me to reseat the wifi! We insisted that we did not want to do this as this would possibly void the warranty and plus its not really gonna work.
We insisted for a replacement, after lodging the DOA would take them 15 DAYS to process ! I insisted that it would be faster for us to change it ourselves with the Good Guys. Good Guys wont accept any word from u until u get a reference no. from HP that says u can replace the laptop. I have to wait at least 2 days for confirmation from HP in my email. I need to produce that email to Good Guys for them to replace.
In all, i regret buying this laptop, getting it to replace is such a pain, if you dont insist on replacing, they would not do that. considering that HP knows about the issue with dv6000 models, this is not acceptable.
I will update you guys when i received the new laptop.

wow – i must admit i’m not too happy that i’ve got this problem with my dv6119us. purchased the same month as rob b (dec 2006) but now that i know what the problem is (a faulty motherboard), i can’t say i’m furious, and nor do i think joining a class action lawsuit over a 3 year old computer is right.
those of you getting jerked around while the computer is still under the manufacturers one year parts and labor warranty or close to it are getting a raw deal, but everyone else who thinks hp sucks because of this? come on. from your car to your refrigerator to your socket wrench, they give you a warranty for a reason. hp even extended it to two years -for free-. how many pieces of junk technology fail everyday?
yeah I’ll buy hp again, they’ve been fair to deal with. Pick a brand and a product, and somebody hates them with a burning passion over how they were done wrong. i’ve seem so much whining and feet stomping over the past two days while looking for a solution to this problem, I’m amazed that our society hasn’t collapsed from unrealistic expectations. but maybe its started doing that now.

Just wanted to say thank you for all the information regarding the dv6000 HP Pavilion. Wireless wasn’t working; spent significant hours trying to figure it out. Called HP and they wanted $260 to fix it; told me the free fix expired. Purchased the USB wireless adapter for $30 and it has been working so far! THANKS!

I am so glad that many DV6000 series Pavilion laptops were repaired by HP. However, the TX1000 series of laptops uses the same defective motherboard and has the same problems as the Dv6000 series and no recall or repair program was instituted by HP. The motherboard HP part number is 441097-001, the same as used by the Dv6000 series. I ordered a motherboard to repair a HP Pavilion tx1327cl. When I placed the order I was required by HP to provide the unit’s serial number and product number. The replacement part costs over $400.00! I installed the replacement motherboard and discovered that it was not correctly configured for a tx1327cl but rather a tx1250eg. The BIOS needed to be tattooed, that is a special HP utilility called HPsetCfg is need to change the BIOS serial and product numbers. Why is this important? If you try to restore the system from a HP System Restore DVD, the system will be setup as a tx1250eg. If you try to restore the system from the user made restore disks, an error message occurs, “Disks not for this machine”. I spent many hours on the phone with HP support explaining this problem and I was directed to a case manager. The case manager explained that I should have sent the notebook to HP for repair and there was nothing that could be done to resolve the problem. I came up with my own solution: I contested the parts purchase with my credit card company and requested a full refund since the part HP provided did not correct the problem as it was the wrong part for a tx1327cl. HP is not short for Hewlett Packard, it REALLY means Hopeless Products. Our IT group will never purchase HP products nor recommend them to any of our clients. HP you are the new Packard Bell and very soon we will be reading about you going bankrupt! Thanks for nothing HP.

The same issue just occurred on my dv9410us laptop. Downside is my laptop is out of warranty (by 7 months), so the replacement motherboard is going to cost $399. This should be a recall if it is a known problem and I will pursue HP to request that this faulty motherboard be replaced since it is a known issue. If all else fails, I won’t be buying another HP and will opt for an Apple instead. Very dissapointed.

April 25th, 2010 at 8:09 pm
My dv6436nr is having the same problems as everyone else. I purchased it in July 2007 and the original problems began in oct 2008. I sent it back to HP and they replaced the motherboard and sent me a new power cord. I was out of my 1 yr warranty and this particular laptop was not covered under the Warranty Servie Enhancement Program for whatever reason, but HP fixed it for free anyway. Two months ago it started doing the same thing again: the wireless adapter would disappear from the device manager and the wireless would work about 2% of the time. I called HP about 5 times and eventually was elevated to a Case Manager. Although she was really nice, she said the could not do anything for me. Tonight…I got the black screen of death. When I push the power button, the key lights will glow for 1 second then nothing happens.
I am in the process of filing a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office for the State of WA for fraud and unfair business practices by HP. HP is very aware of he problem with the dv2000/6000/9000 laptops, but has done little to fix it. I’m so tired of waiting for HP to do the right thing, that I am going to go at them. Pending the decision by the AG’s office, I plan to file a small claims suit seeking the return of money that I paid for the laptop. Only when HP realizes that cannot weasel out of doing what’s right by their consumers will they step up. Let your voice be heard and contact your AG office now. The more people that file a complaint, the more likely an AG will move forward with a lawsuit.

My HP DV6000 is fairly ok but has so many freaking glitches. Ok well i started using it with vista.. it worked fine after a while. Eventually, i got to a point where my laptop had whats known as the “blank screen” when you can turn it out and the buttons at the top light up but the screen stays blank.. i had to go to youtube and watch videos on how to fix it.. it was working fine, then the sound problem. where the speakers dont work but headphones work. this also can be solved by looking at tutorials. on youtube why is HP having ALL these difiiculties.

Купил сей девайс в США. Всё круто, не обрадовал драйвер для wi-fi, которого, ну ооочень уж трудно найти. А так всё классно!
June 1st, 2010 at 2:35 pm
I purchased a HP DV 6000 about 2 years ago from Future Shop. I was in the USA for a few months and whilst there I experienced problems with my wireless device. My computer failed to connect to the internet and the wireless device was malfunctioning. I called HP in the USA and they informed me that there was a recall on the computer. I informed them that I will send it to them and they said that I must return it to the dealer Futute Shop in Canada. When I returned to Canada I went to Futureshop to return the computer. They confirmed that I had an extended warranty. A week later they told me that the wireless device was faulty and that I had spilled water on the computer which destroyed the motherboard. I denied ever having spilled water on my computer and challenged them to replace or repair my computer. I am now seriously thinking of taking them to court. If anyone has experienced a similar problem please let me know and we can all launch a class action law-suite against these thieves, including HP. I will fund the litigation.
Thanks
Vicky Singh

hey my dv6439nr does the same thing it turns blue whenever it wants to(like it needs somekind of movement) and goes back amber again… i am in a 3rd world country so warranty and contacting hp are of no use any one with a suggestion …. please i want to download lost

The issue with the DV2000, DV6000, DV9000, and TX1000 laptops happens to be both your fan, video memory, and video card.
If you update your BIOS that will help with the overheating, and update your video card drivers directly from Nvidia for the GO6150 series.
If you do not update these files, you will need to have a BGA reflow service to fix your chipsets to restore your wireless and video. What will happen is you will get no video, all blue lights, and the system will cycle on and off every 1 to 2 minutes.

I got this laptop just over 2 years ago. After about 6 months it wouldn’t turn on properly, so I had to reboot it. Then, after about a year the fan blew out. Now it over heats ridiculously quickly. I have got through 3 chargers, which cost ALOT. Now, my 3rd charger is getting bad, and it is hard to keep connection. My laptop does not charge so it has to be plugged in permanently, and on the rare occasions it does fully charge the battery life is around 5-10 minutes. It regularly turns off, really suddenly. Especially if the charger slips out, instead of letting my resume my work as it used to it restarts and sets the date back to 2006. It also makes strange noises and the sound goes all “robotic”. Now, the wireless won’t work, so I did some incestigation and found that it was the error ID 6100, googled it and hit a goldmine with the amount of comments on here. The amount I have payed getting this laptop fixed (the screen also beccame wonky) I could have bought another one. And just for the record, I am only 14 years old. I have seriously wasted so much money on this, I have a right mind to disemble it and sell the parts that do work, and buy a new laptop.

i’ll admit this laptop seems to have really documented issues, which is kinda not cool! it starts getting super hot and shutting itself down, i look it up and low and behold it’s a common problem. my wireless suddenly disappears, i say what model it is and the computer smart people are just like oh no! happens with the dv6000. to be fair, they just took out and put back in my card and the wireless came back, and they did suggest either getting a new card or one of those usb things u can insert; who gives a crap about fcc guidelines on wireless cards anyway
